The DeKalb Middle School Saints traveled to Baxter last Thursday to take on the Cornerstone Yellowjackets. While DeKalb came out strong and took the early lead, the Yellowjackets would not give up, and the game stayed close right to the end.
The Saints outscored Cornerstone 12-6 in the first quarter, with Bradley Miller, Trey Jones, Tyler Cantrell and Tanner Poss each getting a two-pointer. Cantrell would also come away with a three-point shot.
But the second quarter would be a mirror image of the first, with Cornerstone getting 12 points and DeKalb six, tying the game 18-18 into the half. Poss and Colter Norris would each have a two-point shot in the quarter.
The Yellowjackets took a narrow lead in the third quarter, scoring eight points to the Saints’ six. Jones had two two-pointers, with Poss getting one. Cornerstone took the two-point lead 26-24.
It was a close game all the way through the fourth quarter. The Saints scored eight points, with five points coming off of 12 shots at the hoop. Marshal Evins had a three-pointer, while Poss got another two-pointer. But it wasn’t enough. The Yellowjackets scored 10 points to give Cornerstone the 36-32 win.
Miller went three for six on free throws, while Jones was two for eight attempts. Poss was one for two, and Evins and Cantrell were each zero for two.
