Saints lose two as season begins

It’s basketball season and the DeKalb Middle School Saints boy’s basketball team hosted Van Buren County last Monday in a home match up.
The Saints fell behind early in the game with the Eagles coming away with 16 points in the first quarter, compared to DeKalb’s four with Austin Johnson getting a three-pointer.
Van Buren would not relinquish the lead through the rest of the game, getting seven points in the second quarter and eight in the third. The Saints would come close to matching points, with most of the points coming from the free-throw line. Bradley Miller had a two-pointer in the second quarter and another in the third. The Eagles would be up 31-16 at the end of the third.
It was in the fourth quarter that Van buren really turned up the heat. The Eagles would come away with 20 points versus the Saints’ four. Tanner Poss would have a two-pointer, as well as Luke Bryant, but DeKalb would fall, 51-20.
Marshal Evins would have three free-throws made out of seven attempts in the game, while Bradley Miller would get one out of two. Trey Jones and Noah Gill would miss two attempts, with Logan Painter getting two out of six attempts.
The previous week the Saints played a much tighter game, this time facing off with Rickman Middle School.
DeKalb would come out strong in the first quarter, getting 18 points to Rickman’s 12. Marshal Evins and Tyler Cantrell would each get two three-pointers, while Tanner Poss would get two points and a three-point shot.
Rickman would inch closer in the second quarter, getting six points to DeKalb’s three. Trey Jones would come away with a two-point shot during play, and the Saints would keep the lead into the half, 21-18.
It was the beginning of the second half when Rickman took the lead, coming out on fire and scoring 18 points to the Saints’ 10. Cantrell would have a three-point and a two-point shot, with Colter Norris also getting a three-pointer and Logan Painter getting a two-pointer. Rickman was up, 39-31.
The Saints would keep things close in the fourth quarter, but Rickman would stay ahead scoring ten points to DeKalb’s nine. Rickman would hold take the victory, 49-40.
Evins would make two free throws on four attempts in the game, while Miller would get three of four.
