With only a buzzer beater in White County separating them from a perfect season, the DeKalb Middle School Saints marched on in their extraordinary season, setting their record at 13-1 with a win over Cannon County this past week, 38-30.
“I think that just made them hungrier,”
said Saints Coach Cody Randolph of the loss at Sparta earlier this year in
which his team went just 6 for 15 at the line. “I showed them that it won’t
just be handed to them.”
The hunger for victory showed in their physical matchup Thursday evening against the visiting Cannon County squad. The teams swapped blows in the first period and were knotted at nine at the end of one before the Saints were able to get some footing behind their big man, Robert Wheeler who scored six of his game high 19 in the second stanza. However, it was the third that separated the men from the boys as Elishah Ramos got involved, scoring six of his eight in the frame, helping the Saints outscore the Lions 13-8 in the period. The Saints were able to hold off a late charge by the Lions to continue their winning streak as they get ready to play host to Livingston Thursday night and then entertain Warren County during a matinee before the student body at noon Friday.
The Lady Saints also won Thursday evening, topping the Lady Lions 42-29.
Helping VanVranken and Griffith in scoring was Megan Walker with seven, Bri Murphy with six and Xharia Lyons with four.
