The DeKalb Middle School Saints and Lady Saints repelled a pair of runs by Hilham this past week to get a sweep over their rivals
The Lady Saints took a 32-25 win in Smithville this past week thanks to balanced scoring as seven members of the squad inked the scoring ledger even though not one hit double digits on the road to victory.
As has been the case for much of the season, Ella VanVraken led the Lady Saints in scoring, bucketing nine, six of which came in the first quarter. With VanVraken scoring six of the team’s eight in the opening frame, the Lady Saints went on to throw in nine more points in the second, three of those coming from a Chloe VanVraken shot from beyond the arc.
The team entered the third with a lead and was able to pad their advantage a bit with an eight point performance, three of those coming from a Dare Collins three.
Hilham wasn’t finished; however, as they mounted a fourth quarter run which was countered by Collins who was perfect at the foul line, leading her team with four points in the final frame to preserve the victory. She and Camryn Branin had seven on the night.
The boys game ended up being a higher scoring affair but with the same result as the Saints held off Hilham for a 50-44, improving their record to 8-6 on the season.
The tone was set from the opening tip as Jacob Hendrix went off in the first period, scoring 11 of his team’s 17 first quarter points as they gave Hilham a cold reception, going up 17-9 early. Connor Close helped pace his team in the second with a three point showing as the visitors were able to close their disadvantage by one by the half.
Third third stanza saw the Saints open the door as they were only able to must four points, allowing Hilham to even the game as they scored 16 points in the third. The comeback; however, was rebuffed in the fourth thanks in part to Owen Snipes who went perfect from the charity stripe and added a long-range three to help the Saints hold on for victory.
