The Red and Blue Faithful traveled to Lafayette last Tuesday night for their August 11th rainout vs perennial conference foe Macon County. This game took on special significance, as the winner thrust itself firmly in playoff contention and the loser was eliminated. The Tigers always seem to field a squad of big, athletic players and 2022 was no different as Macon County seemingly ran at will on the Saints, gaining over 225 yards of offense and 4 touchdowns on the ground.
The Saints were able to move the ball at times, but mistakes and missed opportunities plagued DMS seemingly all night, ending drives and preventing any type of momentum for DeKalb.
Macon County opened the game on offense and took only 2 plays to travel 53 yards to paydirt. The two point conversion attempt was good and with only 49 seconds elapsed, Macon County led 8-0.
The Saints then put together a promising drive. Eighth grade quarterback Jesse Foutch led his team downfield on 7 plays for 56 yards before throwing an interception at the Macon County 34 yard line.
This time Macon County would need only one play from their big tailback to rumble 66 yards downfield for another Tiger touchdown. This time the 2 point attempt failed and Macon County led 14-0.
The Saints would fumble the ball back to Macon County late in the first quarter but the Saints’ defense would force a turnover on downs. Middle would be forced to punt on their next possession, giving the ball back to the dangerous, quick strike Macon County offense.
Two plays later, the Tigers found themselves in the endzone for the third time in the contest after a 35 yard scamper with 4:53 left in the half. Again, the two point conversion would fail, upping the score to 22-0.
Neither team would score again in the first half. The Saints again put together a nice 13 play drive, that took up all but 18 seconds of the third quarter and driving them deep into Macon County territory before fizzling out on the Macon County 27 yard line.
Macon County would then put the last score of the game on the boards with just over 7:00 mins left in the contest, when they drove 73 yards downfield on 4 plays for another Tiger touchdown. The two point conversion failed, ending the game at 28-0.
The Saints will travel to Prescott Elementary in Cookeville Tuesday September 20th, for their last regular season game.
