Cole Bain pushes his way through a tough Macon County team for a few yards.

The DeKalb Middle School Saints football team played their second game of the season last week and have yet to put any points on the scoreboard. While DMS had a few chances to score in last week’s game against Overton, last Thursday’s game against the Macon Tigers was a blowout.

Macon won the toss and elected to defer until the second half. The Saints would start their drive at the 35, and actually lose a yard before being forced to punt.

The Tigers would start their drive at midfield and push down to the DeKalb 40 before a sack and a false start pushed them back to the 49, where they would punt as the first quarter wound down.

Once again the Saints couldn’t gain any traction. Starting at their own 13, a quarterback keeper by Jon Hendrix gained five yards, then another took it to the 20. A pass to Conner Hopkins only gained two more yards, and facing a fourth and one, the Saints punted.

This time Macon County would make them pay. Starting at the DeKalb 48, the Tigers began a five-play drive that would take them into the end zone. The Tigers would keep it on the ground, running up the middle to the 43, then to the 35. Another run went to the 31, and another to the 28. The next play, up the middle, took Macon to the end zone for six. A two-point run was good, and the Tigers took an 8-0 lead with 5:09 left in the second quarter.

DeKalb’s next possession started at their own 28, but once again they could get down the field. A pair of Hendrix keeps got down to the 35, but a false start on the next play backed them up again. A run by Wyatt Carter gained one penalty yard back, but then, while going for it on fourth down, an incomplete pass gave the ball back to the Tigers at the 31.

A Tigers run took the ball to the 26, then a pass was broken up by the Saints’ Blaine Atnip. DeKalb looked as if they might be able hold, but an off sides call gave Macon a first down. A run took the ball down to the 17, but another run loss yardage back to the 18. A pass was incomplete, and facing a fourth and eight, Macon lined up when another off sides cost the Saints. Now facing a fourth and three from the 13, a carry up the middle was good to the four, and another carry was good for the touchdown. A pass was complete for the two-point conversion and with 31 seconds left in the half, the Saints were down 16-0.

The Saints looked to be in desperation mode as they started their next possession. Starting at their own 35, a deep Hendrix pass was intercepted and taken all the way down for six points. A two-point attempt was no good, but in just 14 seconds the Saints had given up 13 points. The Tigers took a 22-0 lead as the half ended.

The Tigers would waste no time as the second half began. Starting at the DeKalb 45, a run carried them down to the 43, then a pass was good to the 40. The next play, a handoff, was good for six more points with 6:33 left in the third. A two-point pass was broke up at the line, but Macon had taken a 28-0 lead.

The kickoff set the Saints up at their own 41, and a Preston Taylor run was good to the 44. A handoff to Carter netted no yards, then another Taylor run was good to the Tiger 49. A run by Cole Bain was stuffed in the backfield at the DeKalb 48, then another Bain run netted no yardage. A keeper was good to the Tiger 44, and deciding to go for it on fourth down, another keeper lost yards to the Tiger 48, where Macon took over.

Macon struggled to get yards on their possession, with a muffed handoff resulting in no gain, then a handoff for a run looking to be stopped in the backfield, but a controversial call ended with a facemask penalty against the Saints. The ball was placed at the DeKalb 41, but the Tiger would not be able to take advantage. Aided by a false start as the fourth quarter began, they would only gain one more yard before being forced to punt.

Backed up at their own 19, the Saints would not be able to move. A Taylor carry was stuffed, then another lost one yard. A snap to Jesse Foutch was only good to the 20, and the Saints themselves would punt.

This time Macon would cash in on their field position. Starting at the DeKalb 48, a carry was good to the 40, then another took the ball down to the one. A run up the middle was good for the touchdown. A pitch back run was unsuccessful for the two-point try, but the Tigers took a 34-0 lead.

The Saints started their next possession at their own 40, but again couldn’t make anything happen. They would only reach the 44 before having to punt. With only 1:10 left to play.

Backed up to their own 28, the Tigers ran one play up the middle all the way in for six. A run for two was stopped, but with 52 seconds left in the game, Macon commanded a 40-0 lead.

The Saints only managed one more play before the clock would run down and end the game.
