The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams traveled to Watertown on Thursday night to take on the Purple Tigers. Both squads came back to Smithville with losses. The Lady Saints lost 38-31 to the Lady Purple Tigers. The Saints lost a very competitive game 35-32 to the Watertown Purple Tigers.
The Lady Saints (5-0) played a very talented Lady Purple Tigers' team but were unable to overcome a sub-par night shooting the ball. The Lady Saints went 0-9 from the field in the first half, but they later settled down. However, they could not pull themselves out of the hole.
The Lady Saints started well in the first period, matching Watertown's tempo. The period ended with a score of 6-5, in favor of the Lady Purple Tigers.
The second period, however, was all Watertown, as they took advantage of the Lady Saints.
DeKalb's only points in the first half came from the free-throw line. The Lady Purple Tigers extended their lead to 16-8 at the half.
During the half-time break, Lady Saints Head Coach Joe Agee took his team into the locker room and made some adjustments.
However, the Lady Saints still were unable to make enough shots to climb back into the ballgame. The Lady Saints went on to lose 38-31, giving DeKalb their first loss of the season.
In the nightcap, the Saints played a very competitive game, trading buckets with the Purple Tigers. At the half, the Saints led by four points with a score of 22-18.
The Saints defense played hard and created havoc for the Watertown Tigers, keeping DeKalb in control 29-27 at the end of the third period.
However, in the last period of the game, Watertown's defense stiffened and only allowed the Saints three points in the period.
The Purple Tigers outscored the Saints seven points to three to take the lead with a score of 35-32, with only seconds left in the game.
The Saints had a chance to tie the game with their last possession, as the buzzer sounded, but the shot did not fall for the Saints.
