Ella VanVraken had a dozen as the DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints grabbed a 36-32 win at Baxter this past week, Meanwhile, 23 from Jacob Hendrix wasn’t enough to lift the Saints over Baxter as they lost a 51-45 shootout.
VanVraken, Cadee Griffith and Avery Agee all had three balls for the Lady Saints as they opened up a 9-8 lead in Baxter after one. They improved their lead in the second as they outscored their hosts 12-4 with VanVraken scoring seven of those points.
The third would mark the first time Baxter outscored their guests as they outshot the Lady Saints, 12-11 in the third. While getting outscored, the Lady Saints still held a decided advantage going into the final frame but that’s when their offense swooned, managing only four points. However, that was enough as Baxter could not take advantage, posting only eight down the stretch.
In the boys’ game, Connor Close and Jacob Hendrix both led the Saints in the first with five apiece as the visitors took a 14-10 advantage. Close contributed eight on the night; however, it was Hendrix who got hot in the second, scoring all but one of the Saints’ 10 points in the period.
Still a nail-biter coming out of the half, Owens Snipes posted all six of his points as the Saints held the lead after getting 15 points in the period. DeKalb hit a brick wall in the fourth as they could only manage six points while Baxter scored 17, allowing them to pull away for the win.
