The Lady Saints found themselves
outrebounded and outscored in the second half of their game against
Gordonsville, turnovers and missed shots leaving their visitors numerous
opportunities. However, there were no worries for the home team since their opponents
didn’t score a single point in the first half, leaving the DeKalb Middle School
girls to cruise to a 25-12 victory this past week.
It was certainly a tale of two halves as the Lady Saints got going in the second quarter thanks to Ella VanVranken scoring eight of her team’s second period points on the way to being the night’s leading scorer with 11. Her scoring prowess gave the Lady Saints a 16-0 half-time lead, a lead that grew immediately in the second half when Bri Murphy and Ally Fuller scored immediately after the break to give their team a commanding 20-0 lead and spark concerns the Gordonsville squad might get shut out. However, with about five minutes to go in the third, Kelsey Hailey threw in a mid-range jumper to kill the skunk. Her field goal seemed to tear the lid off the basket as her squad went on to score seven points in the third while holding the Lady Saints scoreless the rest of the frame.
The deep hole Gordonsville dug for itself proved to be too deep as DeKalb was able to match a five-point fourth quarter by the visitors and seal the win.
Contributing to the score along with VanVranken were Fuller with six, Cadee Griffith with four, Murphy and Avery Agee, both with two.
Meanwhile, the boys didn’t find their path
as easy as Gordonsville fought and clawed all the way before the Bulldogs were
able to put them away.
The first quarter set the tone for the
game as Connor Close started out hot, scoring six of his game high 13 in the
opening stanza to help the Saints get out of the gates with a 12-6 lead. The
second quarter saw Gordonsville’s Peyton Climer come alive, scoring seven on
the way to leading all scorers on the night with 15. His offensive explosion
drew them within four at 17-13 when the teams went to the locker rooms. They
would blow at tire; however, after the break, only able to score a single
basket by Climer in that period while DeKalb posted seven.
Joining Close in scoring were Holden Trapp with eight, Jacob Hendrix with three and Stetson Agee with two.
