The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were in action last week, hosting Middle Tennessee Christian at home. Games that had been scheduled at Prescott Middle earlier in the week were cancelled due to icy roads and snow.
On Jan. 9, DMS took on teams from MTC and the girls took to the court first. The Lady Saints took the lead in the first period, scoring nine points and keeping MTC to only four. Julia Curtis had three two-pointers, while Abbi Taylor had one.
In the second period, MTC inched closer, scoring 12 points to the Lady Saints’ nine. Curtis had another two two-pointers, while Macy Hedge had one. DeKalb kept a narrow lead at the half, 18-16.
The Lady Saints came away with eight points in the third period, with Joni Robinson getting a three-pointer, and Hedge and Curtis each getting a two-pointer. MTC racked up points however, getting 12 points and pulling ahead, 28-26.
The fourth period saw the Lady Saints get fired up, taking 11 points with three two-pointers by Robinson, a three-point goal by Madison Parsley, and a two-point basket by Curtis. MTC was held to only three points, giving DeKalb the 37-31 win.
Curtis was two for three on free throws, while Abby Evans was two for two, and Parsley was one for two.
In the boys’ game, the Saints came out and scored 11 points in the first period. Bradley Miller had two two-pointers, with Marshal Evins getting a three-point basket, and Trey Jones and Tanner Poss each getting a two-pointer. MTC took the early lead, scoring 12 points.
The Saints scored eight points in the second period, with Evins, Miller, Jones and Poss each getting a two-point goal. MTC scored 14 points, increasing their lead at the half, 26-19.
In the third period, DMS got 12 points including two two-pointers by Jones, a three-pointer by Austin Johnson, and two-point shots by Evins and Logan Painter. MTC matched the scoring, getting 12 points of their own and keeping a 38-31 lead.
In the fourth period, the Saints came away with 13 points, including two-point shots by Evins and Jones. The team also held MTC to only six points, sending the game into overtime, 44 all.
The Saints had clawed their way back, but overtime would not be kind to them. DMS was held scoreless in the period, while MTC got nine points and the 53-44 win.
Jones went eight for nine on free throws, while Tyree Cripps went two for four. Miller was zero for one, and Evins was zero for two.
