The DeKalb Middle School Saints celebrated homecoming with a win Thursday night as they led cover to cover, beating Overton County 22-6 to even their record at two up and two down.

The Saints were all business as they pushed the pigskin down the field on their first drive, Quarterback Briz Trapp galloping for a 40-yard gain to set the tone on the first series. Trapp toted the ball 15 times for 77 yards on the evening and scored a touchdown. His performance came on the heels of the Saints’ loss the week before, 26-20 to Trousdale County during which Trapp rushed the ball 26 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

The conversion gave the Saints an 8-0 lead and they were soon in the red zone again, hammering in the ball for a second time in the first quarter to give them a 14-0 advantage. Ari White was the work horse on the series, steamrolling through defenders as he carried the ball 21 times on the evening for110yards and two touchdowns. Gabe Hollandsworth was the third member of the rushing trio, rushing 11 times for 50 yards. Through the air, Axel Aranda caught four balls for 37 yards while Austin Nicholson had two for 19. Andrew Dakas had just one catch but it was big enough to lead all Saints in receiving yardage as it was a 34-yard grab.

While pleased his squad was able to take the homecoming win, Coach Justin Poteete is already looking to the future and says his team will have to improve for the stretch run.

“We’re glad to come away with a W, but ultimately we have to get more physical as a team,” he said. “The next two games will show our identity. Baxter and Macon are both big and physical. We have to play four physical, fundamental quarters of football.”

The Saints play at Upperman Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. and then cap the regular season with eighth-grade night Sept. 12.
