Seemingly safe with a 3-1 lead and a man advantage after a Crossville player was ejected after getting red card, the DeKalb Middle Schools Saints had to fight their way to victory in overtime after the Jets made a late run.
The 4-3 win propelled the Saints soccer club into the second round of the district tourney at Algood Tuesday evening and snatched victory from the mouth of what would have been a haunting defeat after they held a commanding lead with just five minutes to go in the game.
Their lead came after a pair of controversial calls against the Jets that led Cumberland coaches and fans to very vocally question their eyesight of the referees. The calls led directly to two DeKalb goals as Yair Mata and Miguel Mata both hit penalty kicks for fouls inside the box by Cumberland United. Another goal Davod Suastgui appeared to cement the victory at 3-1 with five minutes to go. A takedown foul by a Cumberland United defender, while saving an easy goal, led to his ejection and a penalty kick that would have cemented the game. However, the kick went high and Cumberland began an onslaught of attacks despite being short-handed. They were able to put to kicks in the back of the Saint net to force overtime. However, toward the end of the first overtime period Mario Matias took an assist from Ashton Campbell to score the game winner with under three minutes remaining.
