Salley, Odom receive District 8-AA honors

DCHS senior Shane Salley has been named the Most Valuable Player in District 8-AA high school baseball.Salley, an outstanding pitcher and outfielder for the Tigers, was a lynchpin in the teams sucessful bid for the district championship.The MVP allowed only three earned runs all season, struck out 41 batters in 33 innings on the mound, and went 6-0 pitching for the Tigers this season.Salley had 34 hits and batted in 19 runs.Tiger baseball Coach Scott Odom was also honored, along with five other Tigers.Odom, in his thirteenth season as DCHS head baseball coach, was named the Coach of the Year in District 8-AA for the 2011 season. The tigers enjoyed a 10-0 district record for the season.Andrew Atnip, Tyler Caldwell, Tyler Kent, Cody Puckett and Destry Wiggins were also named to the All-District squad.District Tournament play will begin on May 5, when sixth seed York Institute meets third-ranked Smith County at Carthage, and Livingston Academy, the fifth seed, will take on fourth-ranked Cannon County at Woodbury.The Tigers will play their first tournament game on Monday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of the York-Smith County game. The Monday games will be played at the DCHS baseball field in Smithville.
