The year 2020 has come and gone, and while many people say "good riddance" to what was considered the worst year in recent memory, others have fond memories of record breaking feats and perseverance. From the baseball diamond to the grindiron, 2020 was memorable in many ways.
July 6 - DeKalb Youth Baseball was back in action as DeKalb Youth Baseball resumed from its Covid-19 hiatus. While team members and spectators were happy to see some semblance of sports back in action, social distancing and precautions were still in affect.
July 14 - Local fans were keeping their fingers crossed for the upcoming 20/21 DCHS Tiger Football season. The TSSAA deferred a vote as to how to deal with the high school season. The uncertainty was worrisome for Tiger fans, as the team was shaping up as the team that would be hard to beat.
July 27 - DeKalb Youth Baseball was once again on hiatus after Covid-19 concerns halted an already late season again. Officials said the season would resume after a couple of weeks, and were planning a competitive fall season.
August 3 - The DeKalb County Lady Tigers Soccer team was getting ready for the start of the 2020 season. As with other sports, the team was having to deal with Covid-19 precautions and restrictions.
August 20 - It was a tale of two halves at the DeKalb Middle School Saints season opener. The team faced off against a tough Cannon County team, keeping it close in the first half, then letting it run away in the second.
August 24 - The Lady Saints kicked off their season with a win at home, then an away game against a conference rival. Like other school sports, fans were mandated to wearing masks and had to undergo temperature checks at the gates. The Covid-19 pandemic had already forced a cancellation to at least one of the Lady Saints' games.
September 4 - The DeKalb County Tigers got their first win of the 2020 season, after squeaking past Stone Memorial. While the victory was a regional win for the team, the Tigers were not making it easy for fans, blowing a three score lead in the game.
September 18 - The DeKalb County Tigers wanted a win after dropping all three home games so far in the season. On the road at Grundy County, the Tigers shutout the Yellow Jackets 32-0.
September 21 - The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints went on the road, playing two conference games, and trying to stay in position for first place. The Lady Saints entered the last week of the Regular Season with an overall record of 5-2-2, and a 4-0-2 conference record.
September 25 - After dropping three home games, and winning both road games, the DeKalb County High School Tigers trounced the Cannon County Lions in Woodbury, 49-7, advancing to .500 on the season.
October 2 - It was a huge game for the DeKalb County High School Tigers, in more ways than one. Not only was it the highlight of Homecoming Week for the Tigers, it was also a very important regional game against a team that DeKalb had only beaten once since 1994. The Livingston Academy Wildcats were in town, and it would be a night that would not disappoint. DeKalb would get the 38-14 homecoming victory.
October 12 - Members of the DeKalb Fishing Team kicked off the season at the Mid TN Showdown on Old Hickory Lake.
October 16 - It would be Tigers versus Tigers, with the championship going to the winner. DeKalb was tied with Macon County, 2-0, in regional play, and had already passed one major obstacle, beating Livingston Academy earlier in the season. With a win, DeKalb would own the tiebreaker, even if they lost their last regular scheduled season game against Cumberland County. In the end, DeKalb claimed the 24-20 victory, claiming the Class 4A Region 3 championship, marking the first time in school history.
October 25 - DCHS Senior Quarterback Axel Aldino was selected to participate in the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Combine.
October 28 - The NFL’s Tennessee Titans honored DCHS Tigers Head Football Coach Steve Trapp as their Coach of the Week. Trapp was in his 16th season as the head coach of the Tigers.
November 6 - After facing a Covid-19 scare that might have sidelined the champs from the playoffs, the DeKalb Tigers were cleared to play football. Friday night lights were back on at home as the Tigers took on the Spring Hill Raiders in the first round of the TSSAA football playoffs. The home crowd was out in force for the match that also served as a belated Senior Night for DCHS. DeKalb would take the 38-15 victory.
November 9 - The DeKalb West Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, along with the Saints and Lady Saints, began their basketball seasons, with Covid restrictions in place.
November 10 - Seventeen DCHS Football players earned 2020 All-Region honors including Tiger Quarterback Axel Aldino who was named Most Valuable Player, Wide Receiver Desmond Nokes, the region’s Co-Offensive MVP with Macon County’s Running Back Ethan Jenkins, and Tiger Linebacker Isaiah Harrington, the Defensive MVP. Tiger Coach Steve Trapp was the Region’s Coach of the Year.
November 13 - In the second round of the TSSAA playoffs, two basically equally matched teams once again faced off in post season play. The DeKalb County Football Tigers took on the Nolensville Knights. In the end, the Tigers would come two yards short in the fourth quarter, falling 24-17.
November 20 - The DCHS basketball teams got the season off to a great start with wins at home over visiting Whitehouse.
November 23 - A game between the DMS Lady Saints and Cannon County had a little extra significance. After the team's victory, Head Coach Josh Agee was surprised with a banner made by the team, celebrating his 250th win.
