Lance Davis pounds a return in DeKalb County tennis action at the city courts this past week.

The girls and boys tennis teams posted a split decision in their opening matches here with Cumberland County this past week.

The boys won every game. Lance Davis posted an 8-0 win. High school matches are won by the player who is the first to win eight games, provided they win by two games. If there is not a two game lead at the end, a tie breaker is played. Along with Davis blanking his competition, teammate Dosson Medlin won his match 8-3. Hayes and Davis then combined to take their doubles match 9-8, winning in the deciding tie-breaker 7-0. Garrett Hayes did not finish his game as he withdrew due to injury with the score tied 7-7.

Things did not go so well for the girls squad as they did not win a match. Kayla Belk fell 2-8 as did Faith Judkins and Shelby Clayborn. Daisy Hernandez lost 0-8 while Catherine Caplinger lost 5-8. Jhoany Gaspar got close, falling 7-9. The team of Belk/Caplinger and Clayton/Hernandez fell 0-8 while Judkins/Gaspar were nipped 7-9.
