The DeKalb County High School tennis team swept Livingston this past week, the girls’ winning margin coming in doubles action while singles proved to be the key to success for the boys team.
The girls split their singles matches 3-3 with their top seeds all winning. Kayla Belk topped Zoe Higgs 8-3 while Faith Judkins beat Ciara Crabtree 8-0 and Catherine Caplinger defeated Kasey Short 8-3. High school matches go to the first player to win eight games but they must win by two. A tie at the end means a tie-breaker game.
Jhoany Gaspar fell to Cameron Keefer 3-8 while Shelby Clayborn lost to Samantha Furman 1-8 and Hannah McBride was defeated by Ashley Johnson 2-8.
The girls’ win; however, came thanks to their sweep of doubles tennis as Belk and Caplinger beat Johnson and Crabtree 8-2. Sophie Hackett and Judkins won their match over Higgs and Keefer 8-2 while Daisy Hernandez and Marlene Coronilla blanked Madie Speck and Kaylee Laycock 8-0. In the end the girls won 6-3 in total matches.
The boys also won their match 6-3 over Livingston, dropping just one singles match. Top seeded Lance Davis blanked Livingston’s number-one Zach Tolhurst 8-0 while second-seeded Ethan Cantrell fell to Jeff Chen 6-8. Eli Cantrell, Dosson Medlin, Garrett Hayes and Justin Washer all won their matches with Washer shutting out his opponent 8-0.
Top-seeded doubles team Davis and Cantrell took care of business against Tolhurst and Chen by a count of 8-5, while the teams of Cantrell and Medlin and Christian Trail and Ben Snipes were both defeated 3-8.
