The jeers of the Cannon County crowd from last year were distant echoes Friday night as the DeKalb County Tigers avenged last year’s “loss” at Woodbury by taming the Lions on homecoming Friday night, 41-10.
It was never a game after Cannon County’s first drive which stalled deep in Tiger territory when they failed on fourth down. Quarterback Axel Aldino set the top moments later when he fired a 70-yard bomb to flip the field. The drive was capped by a four-yard Colby Barnes scamper as he continued putting up impressive numbers after his debut in the backfield last week.
Dylan Denson got on the scoring ledger at the 9:19 mark of the second quarter, going in from the one to make the score 14-0. Just three minutes later, Aldino did it himself, scoring on a eight-yard quarterback keep to make it 21-0. The scoring finished in the first half when Alan Munoz caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Aldino. However, Munoz failed to convert on the extra point moments later, making it 27-0 at the break.
The rout was on at the opening kickoff the second half as Desmond Nokes took it to the house with an 87-yard touchdown return. The Tigers converted on a two-point conversion to make it 35-0 and start the running clock under the mercy rule.
Colby Barnes was able to notch a second TD for the game, giving him five in the past two games, to make it 41-0.
Cannon County was able to add some window dressing early in the fourth with a prayer thrown up by a scrambling Jamal Barrett who found Brady Cunningham behind the Tiger defense. A two-point conversion by the Lions and a safety that came when a high snap went over quarterback Kolter Kilgore’s head summed up the scoring.
The Tigers are 3-3 with the win and are still 1-0 in the district. Technically, the win is a consecutive win over Cannon County because even though the Tigers “lost” 19-7 in Woodbury last year, Cannon County was forced to vacate all their wins in the 2018 season due to a TSSAA rules violation.
The Tigers will visit Livingston Academy in a region tilt Friday night at 7 p.m. Livingston is undefeated on the season.
