Before going on their Christmas break, the DeKalb County High School Tigers wrapped up their Christmas Classic Tournament, playing three games in three days.

 

On Dec. 20, the Tigers battled a team from Monterey, with the game staying close all the way to the fourth quarter, and going into overtime.

 

DeKalb scored 12 in the first period, with Justin Bone getting a two-pointer and two free throw points, while Isaac Beck got a two-point basket and one free throw. Aaron Haggard got a three-pointer, and John Roller came away with a two-point shot. Monterey came away with 15 points and the early lead.

 

The Tigers got 15 points in the second period, including a two and three-pointer by Haggard. Beck had a three-pointer and two free throw shots, while Roller had a three-pointer of his own. Gentry Harpole also had a two-point basket. Monterey scored 18 points, adding to their lead at halftime, 33-27.

 

Roller had a pair of three-pointers in the third period, while Haggard had one. Bone had a two-point shot, while Beck added two free throw points. DeKalb scored 13, while holding Monterey to only eight. The Tigers had cut into Monterey’s lead, 41-40.

 

DeKalb came away with 15 points in the fourth period, with Beck taking three three-point baskets, a two-pointer, and two free throw points, while Roller added two points from free throws. Monterey hung with them however, scoring 14 points and tying the game.

 

The Tigers scored seven in the overtime period, with Beck taking a three-point shot, Seth Wright getting a two-pointer, and Haggard hitting a couple of free throws. Monterey came on strong, scoring 13 and taking the win, 68-62.

 

Beck was seven for 10 on free throws, while Bone, Haggard, and Roller were each two for two.

 

That same day, the Tigers took on a foe they had faced the previous day, the Golden Tide of Peabody. It would be a close game.

 

Peabody came out with the early lead, scoring 17 to DeKalb’s 16. Bone was on fire for the Tigers, scoring six two-point baskets, while Beck and Harpole each had a two-pointer of their own.

 

DeKalb scored 15 in the second period, with Bone getting a two and three-pointer, while Beck got a two-point basket and four free throw points. Harpole and Noah Parsley each had a two-pointer. Peabody again came away with 17 points, taking a 34-31 lead at the half.

 

The Tigers were held to only four points in the third period, with two-point shots by Beck and Bone. Peabody took eight points, adding to their lead, 42-35.

 

DeKalb opened up in the fourth period, taking 21 points. Beck had two two-point baskets and three free throw points, while Haggard had a pair of three point shots and a two-pointer. Bone had two three-point baskets. Peabody was held to 20 points, but that was more than enough. The Golden Tide took the victory, 62-56.

 

Beck was seven for seven on free throws, while Harpole was zero for one.

 

On Dec. 22, the Tigers were back on the court, this time taking on Boyd Christian of Warren County in a game that would decide third place for the tournament. DeKalb may have lost some close games earlier in the tourney, but this time they would show some muscle.

 

DeKalb jumped out with 20 points in the first period, with Beck scoring three three-point baskets, Harpole scoring two three-pointers, and Roller getting one. Bone had a two-pointer. Boyd was held to 11 points.

 

The Tigers kept rolling in the second period, adding 18 more points to the scoreboard. Beck ahd a pair of two-point baskets and a three-pointer, while Bone and Harpole each had two two-point shots. Haggard had a three-point basket. Boyd was held to 15 points, giving DeKalb a 38-26 lead at halftime.

 

DeKalb added 19 points in the third period. Harpole had three two-pointers, Bone and Beck each had two, and Kevin Aldino had one. Haggard had another three-point basket. Boyd came away with only five points, giving the Tigers a 57-31 lead.

 

Bone and Trey Jones each had a pair of two-point baskets in the fourth period, while Beck and Chandler Vincent each scored one. DeKalb scored 12, while holding Boyd to only six. The Tigers took the win, and third place in the Christmas Classic, 69-37.
