The DeKalb County Tigerette softball squad broke even in their spring break trip to Gulf Shores, Ala., going three up and three down in the Gulf Coast Classic.
They won their opening game by a count of 5-1, leading Prattville from cover to cover, starting with a 2-1 lead in the first which they never gave up. One run in the second and two in the fourth was enough to claim the victory as they outhit Prattville eight to four. Kenzie France and Emme Colwell both contributed two hits to the total with Megan Walker added a three-bagger to the hit count. Cowell was winning pitcher.
Things got even better for the Tigerettes in game-two at Gulf Shores as they sent Homewood home with a 12-1 drubbing. The second inning was huge for DeKalb as they plated nine runs, the barrage, along with three runs in the third ending the game on the run-rule since the Tigerettes were leading by more than 10. While runs were numerous for the Tigerettes, they only outhit Homewood five to four and actually committed more errors, two to one, than their opponents. Accounting for the hits were Kenzie France and Allison Maynard, each with triples, Joni Robinson with a double and Megan Walker and Emme Colwell, both with singles. France got the win from the circle.
Game three began a rough patch of sorts for the Tigerettes as they dropped their next two, losing to Demopolis 6-3 in a game they were outhit eight to two. France provided the offense with a first inning homerun, giving the Tigerettes the lead until the bottom of the third when Demopolis went ahead for good with a three-run inning.
The Tigerettes fell again, this time to Pleasant Valley by a score of 7-3 despite outhitting their opponents seven to six. Contributing to the loss were four DeKalb field errors.
The Tigerettes got on track their next game, making it a long one for Long, shutting them out 2-0. DeKalb outhit Long seven to six as France, Robinson, Colwell Kelly Roberts and Kristena Bain all had hits. Madison Whitehead was winning pitcher.
Hazelgreen sent the Tigerettes home on a losing note, shutting out DeKalb 4-0. The Tigerettes were able to muster three hits in the loss, those including two by Megan Walker and a two-bagger by Kelly Roberts.
The Tigerettes returned to the Volunteer State with an away game Monday at Cannon County and a return home Tuesday to host Upperman.
Thursday will see them host York and then travel to the Jackson County tournament before traveling April 9 to Central Magnet in Murfreesboro and then returning home to host Watertown on April 10.
