The DeKalb County High School Tigerettes softball team wrapped up their regular season last week, and moved on the post-season play. The girls fell in a close game on the road, but then ended the season with an impressive win.
On Monday, May 2, the Tigerettes were on the road to Lafayette, where they took on the Macon County Lady Tigers. The game would go eight innings and be decided by the last play.
Things wouldn’t get going until the bottom of the second inning, when Macon would come away with four runs. With bases loaded a walk put the first point on the board, then a double would result in three more coming home.
The Tigerettes would finally get in the game at the top of the fourth. Emma Martin would hit a single on a ground ball to third, then take second on an error by first. Bryna Pelham was up next and singled on a hard grounder to right, sending Martin home.
Morgan Walker then stepped to the plate and a bunt and error by the catcher had her on first as Pelham came home. Walker would take third on the same error. Aniston Farler would then single on a grounder to right as Walker touched home plate. DeKalb had cut the lead 4-3.
The Lady Tigers would go three and out at the bottom of the fourth, then the Tigerettes would tie the game their next at bat, then go on to claim the lead. Jacey Hatfield tripled on a line drive to right field, then Emma Martin grounded out to second, but Hatfield was able to come home. Pelham would single on a line drive to left, then Walker would hit a double on a line drive to left as Pelham crossed the plate. DeKalb was up, 5-4.
The lead wouldn’t last long, after a home run by Macon County at the bottom of the fifth once again tied the game.
Ally Griffith would reach after a fly ball to second at the top of the sixth, and would make her way to second after a sacrifice by Madison Martin, but she would be left standing. Macon would also get a runner on as they came to bat, but would not get her home.
Pelham would single on a line drive to center at the top of the seventh, but again would be left standing, then Macon would get a runner on with a walk at the bottom of the inning, but again would not be able to score.
It would come down to the eighth inning, and Farler would get a single on a line drive to center right off the bat. Bri Murphy would sacrifice to the catcher as Farler took second, then Griffith grounded out to short as Farler took third. That would be as far as she would get as Madison Martin flew out to center getting the Lady Tigers off the field.
Macon’s first batter would single on a line drive to left, but would be out at second on a fielder’s choice by the next batter. A single to right had runners at first and second, then a single on a grounder to center had the bases loaded. The next at bat would get a walk, scoring the winning run, 6-5.
Murphy took the loss for DeKalb, surrendering one run on three hits over one inning, walking one. Kilgore started the game, allowing three hits and five runs over six and a third innings, striking out eight.
The following day the Tigerettes were back at home, playing their final regular season game against the Cookeville Lady Cavaliers. The game would be close through the first half, then DeKalb would pull away.
The Cavaliers would get on the board first, scoring one run at the top of the second, but the Tigerettes would take the lead at their next at bat with two runs. With one out, Griffith singled on a grounder to right. Farler would line out to right, then Murphy would single on a ground ball to center as Griffith advanced to third on the throw. Gracie Randolph stepped to the plate and hit a single fly to right as Griffith and Murphy scored. DeKalb was up, 2-1.
Cookeville would tie the game at the top of the third, but DeKalb would step on the gas at the bottom of the fourth.
Griffith singled on a line drive to center, then Farler singled on a grounder to left. Griffith would take third and Farler second on an error. Murphy would ground out to short, but Griffith would score as Farler took third. Randolph was up next and would ground out to second, but Farler touched the plate.
Kennedy Polk would take first on a HBP, then Jacey Hatfield singled on a line drive to left as Chloe Lawson, running for Polk, came home. Hatfield would steal second as Emma Martin came to bat, then Martin singled on a line drive to center as Hatfield scored.
Martin would steal second as Pelham came to bat, then Pelham singled on a line drive to left. Martin scored and Pelham took second on the throw. The Tigerettes commanded a 7-2 lead.
The Tigerettes would pad their lead at the bottom of the fifth after Farler doubled on a line drive to left. Murphy would sacrifice on a fly to center as Farler came home. DeKalb was up 8-2.
DeKalb would seal the game shut at the bottom of the sixth with four more runs. Hatfield singled on a line drive to left, then Emma Martin also singled to left and would take second on the throw as Hatfield took third. Pelham was up next and singled on a fly ball to left as Hatfield scored. Walker stepped to the plate and hit a fly to center and reached on an error as Martin touched the plate.
Griffith would ground out to short, but allowed Pelham to score, then Makayla Scales singled on a line drive to right as Walker scored. The Tigerettes would come away with the 12-2 victory.
Murphy took the win from the circle, surrendering two runs on four hits over six innings, striking out five and walking one.
The Tigerettes first post-season game scheduled for Saturday, May 7, was postponed due to rain.
