After a rainy start to the week last week, the DeKalb County High School Tigerettes softball team finally got back in action, hosting Watertown in their last regularly scheduled game of the season. The night also served as an opportunity to honor the team’s sponsors, as well as recognize the Tigerettes’ lone senior.

It was a rare Wednesday night game for the Tigerettes after rain postponed its scheduled Monday start time, but fans were out in droves as DeKalb took on visiting Watertown. It would be a battle through most of the game.

Before the game the Tigerettes recognized some of the team’s sponsors for their contributions that went towards the Tigerettes’ softball complex. Improvements to the field and the training facility make it possible for the team to train year round. Those recognized were Bennie Curtis with DTC Communications, Casey Midgett with First Bank, Jason Walker with Walker Construction, Colter Norris with Diamond 9, and Monica Reynolds, Rhonda Caplinger, Chokota Orand, Charlene Adcock, Lisa Garrison, Trina Graham, Linda Robinson, Tina Major, and Rhonda Young with Liberty State Bank. The late Roy Nelson Pugh of Liberty State Bank was also recognized, along with his wife Kathy, for their special dedication to the Tigerettes and all DCHS sports programs.

As the game went underway, Bri Murphy led DeKalb from the circle. Watertown went three and out to start the game, but the Tigerettes wouldn’t do much better. Morgan Walker got on after being hit by a pitch, then Aniston Farler singled on a grounder to left field, but that is a far as they would get.

Watertown would get things going at their next at bats, putting two runs on the board, but the Tigerettes would put a run of their own in the books. Emma Martin doubled on a line drive to center field, then advanced to third after a bunt by Murphy. Martin would then score after Ellie Cripps grounded out to second base. At the end of two, DeKalb cut the lead, 2-1.

Murphy held Watertown to a three and out at the top of the third, but the Tigerettes would not do much better at their next at bat, with only Jacey Hatfield reaching off of a ground ball to center.

DeKalb would tie the game at the bottom of the fifth. With two outs on the board, Farler doubled on a line drive to center field, then Hatfield reached off of a grounder and an error by first base, with Farler taking third. Farler would then steal her way home before the end of the inning. The game was tied 2-2.

The tie wouldn’t last long however, as Watertown came back in the sixth inning, scoring two more runs.

The Tigerettes’ Aly Griffith would get on base for DeKalb with a single on a grounder to centerfield, but she would be out at second after Martin singled on a grounded to second base.

Watertown went three and out at the top of the seventh, giving the Tigerettes one last chance at bat. First up, Cripps singled on a line drive to right field, but would later be out at second after a single to shortstop by Morgan Walker. DeKalb could get nothing going after that, giving Watertown the 4-2 win.

Murphy surrendered four runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out three. Farler went two for four at the plate to lead the Tigerettes in hits.

After the game, Ellie Cripps was joined by her parents Troy and Jamie Cripps, as the team recognized their single senior player this season. Cripps was honored with several gifts, flowers, and plaques.

On Friday, May 7, the Tigerettes were back in action, this time taking on Livingston Academy at home. DeKalb was on fire, racking up big points in the game.

Morgan Walker started things off for the Tigerettes in the first inning, touching home after a double by Farler. Farler would come home herself after a passed ball. DeKalb was up, 2-0.

After Livingston went three and out at the top of the second inning, the Tigerettes continued where they had left off. With bases loaded, Griffith was hit by a pitch, allowing Cripps to touch home plate. Then, Martin singled on a line drive to left field as Walker scored, and Hatfield scored on the throw. At the end of two DeKalb was up, 5-0.

Hatfield scored for the Tigerettes in the fourth inning, after a sacrifice fly by Emma Martin. Then, Madison Martin would score after a double on a line drive to left field by Bri Murphy. Murphy would continue home after an error by third base. At the end of the fourth DeKalb held a 8-0 lead.

Livingston avoided the shutout in the sixth inning, scoring two runs, but the Tigerettes came away with four runs of their own. Emma Martin, Madison Martin, and Murphy would each come home after a triple on a line drive to left field by Cripps. Cripps would come home next after a grounder to second by Layla Walker. DeKalb would take the 12-2 victory.

Murphy took the win from the circle, surrendering two runs on three hits over six innings, striking out nine and walking one. Morgan Walker went three for four at the plate for DeKalb.
