Lady Bees claim championship with 13-9 win over DeKalb

The DeKalb County Tigerettes softball team lost 13-9 to the Upperman Lady in the District Tournament Championship game Wednesday evening in Baxter, settling them at second place in the district.In the Wednesday game, Upperman scored eight runs in the second inning, two runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth.DeKalb scored one run in the third inning, seven runs in the fourth, and one in the fifth.Losing pitcher Olivia Norton threw for four innings and gave up eleven runs on fifteen hits.She struck out five batters and walked none.Lauren Colwell took the mound for three innings and gave up two runs on three hits.She struck out one, walked one, and hit a batter.On offense for the Tigerettes, Alex Meadows hammered a single and a double, Brooke Hutchings and Tiffini Hendrixson each hit a single, a double and registered two RBIs.Taylor Monette had a single and an RBI, Hannah Green pounded a homerun, a single and batted one in, Martha Webb punched a single and a triple, and Abbey Caldwell batted a runner in.Three DeKalb County Tigerettes, Alex Meadows, Brooke Hutchings, and Hannah Green, were named to the 2011 All-Tournament Team Wednesday night.Brooke Hutchings, Josie Culwell, and Alex Meadows were elected to the All-District First Team.The Tigerettes had to fight their way out of the loser's bracket on Tuesday night to earn the championship opportunity.The Tigerettes made short work of Smith County on Tuesday with an 8-3 win, and a late-game rally brought them from behind to defeat Upperman 6-5 to force a deciding game on Wednesday.In the game against Smith County, the Tigerettes scored two runs in the first inning, one run in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.Smith County scored one run in the first and two runs in the third inning.Olivia Norton got the win on the mound. She went seven innings and gave up three runs on five hits.She walked four batters, and hit three.On offense for DeKalb, Alex Meadows hit a single, smacked a triple, and batted a run in.Martha Webb, Abbey Caldwell, and Danielle Tyson all hit singles, while Tiffini Hendrixson popped off a double and three RBIs, Taylor Monette hit two singles, and Hannah Green nailed a double and batted in a run.In the game with Upperman, The Tigerettes then took Upperman down 6-5, scoring one run in the first inning, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh.The Bees scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the third, and one in the fourth.Josie Culwell, the winning pitcher, went seven innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on twelve hits.She struck out one and walked one.Alex Meadows hit a single and a double for the Tigerettes, Danielle Tyson hit a double, Brooke Hutchings swatted two singles and batted a run in, Tiffini Hendrixson slammed two doubles with an RBI.Hannah Green banged out three singles and two RBIs, one of which was the winning run, and Josie Culwell hit single and got an RBI.The District 8-AA second seed Tigerettes, will travel to District 7-AA top seed Sequatchie County’s turf on 5-16 for the first round of Regional competition.
