On Saturday afternoon the Tigerettes softball team kicked things off with a pre-season playday with a double header against Watertown at noon, followed by a 2 p.m. game against Lebanon. Both games were in Lebanon where the Tigerettes walked away with two wins, beating Watertown 8-0 and just slipping past Lebanon 4-3.
In the Watertown game, the Tigerettes chose to defend, as they took the field with pitcher Shauna Taylor taking the mound.
The first batter for Watertown was disposed of quickly as she flew out to Lorn Cripps in right field.
The second batter found some luck as she reached first base on a walk from Shauna Taylor. The third batter ripped a single down the alley and the runner on first made her way to second.
The fourth batter ground out to short stop Brooke Hutchings, who tagged a runner on her way to third and gunned out another runner for a force out on second for a double play ending the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first Alex Meadows led off at bat, and flew out to left field. The next batter, Danielle Tyson would ground out followed by Hutchings who struck out.
In the top of the second, pitcher Shauna Taylor made quick of the batters, retiring three straight.
In bottom of the second, Taylor Monette ripped a single, followed by Abbey Caldwell as she laid down a quick ground out. With just one out, Hannah Green was up to bat as she laid one down for a sacrifice RBI as Monette came around to score. Annieka Norton finished the inning striking out.
For a second straight inning the Tigerette pitcher retired three, not allowing a hit.
Both teams remained hitless until the bottom of the fourth and both teams defense shined. DeKalb’s Caldwell broke the slump with a single. It was Hannah Green up after Caldwell’s single, as she blasted a ball deep into center field close to the warning track for an impressive inside-the-park homerun.
Norton’s second at bat, she made it to base on a walk, followed by Shauna Taylor who would fire in a single and bring Norton around for an RBI. Lyndsey Taylor would end the inning as she struck out.
Play would slow down until the bottom of the fifth when Hutchings grabbed a RBI on a single. The score would continue to rise as more Tigerettes found the sweet spot with their bat as Monette added a triple and an RBI. Tiffini Hendrixson would match Monette’s RBI with an RBI of her own with a single in her first at bat. The Tigers would finish the game shutting out Watertown 8-0.
