The DeKalb County High School Tigerettes softball team managed to dodge the rain long enough to get in one game last week, taking an impressive road win against longtime rival Upperman. DeKalb took the lead in the first inning and never looked back.

After a double line drive to left field by Rylee Wilbur at the top of the first, Kora Kilgore drove her home with a single grounder to center.

The Tigerettes would add to their lead at the top of the third, after a single line drive to right by Wilbur, then a single line drive to center by Kilgore. Bryna Pelham stepped to the plate and singled on a pop fly to left, sending Wilbur home. Zayleigh Bain then sacrificed on a fly to center as Chaylea Lunsford, running for Kilgore, crossed the plate. Sophie Adcock then sacrificed on a fly to center as Pelham came home. DeKalb was up 4-0.

It would be even better at the top of the sixth after Adcock singled on a bunt to the pitcher. Maggie Hendrixson reached on a bunt and an error by third, and later Hannah Brown singled on a grounder to center as Adcock and Hendrixson scored. Tatum Young next reached on a bunt and error at first, then Wilbur sacrificed on a fly to second as Brown touched the plate. Kilgore was next and homered on a line drive to left. DeKalb was on top, 9-0.

DeKalb would seal the game up at the top of the seventh. Bain reached on a dropped third strike, then Adcock singled on a pop fly to the pitcher. Hendrixson would then single on a line drive to center, as Adcock and Bain scored.

Upperman had one last at bat, but the Tigerettes would secure the 11-0 shutout. Kilgore struck out 10 batters, giving up one hit and zero runs over seven innings, walking none.

On Monday, April 28, the Tigerettes were on their home field for their last regular game of the season, where they proved why they are the number one seed. After the game, the team’s two senior players, Kora Kilgore and Bryna Pelham, were honored during a ceremony.

In the game, the Tigerettes took on the Lady Jets of Cumberland County and dominated. The game only went through two and a half innings, before it had to be called.

DeKalb scored 11 runs in the first inning alone, then went on to add eight in the second, highlighted by a grand slam home run out of center field by Wilbur.

The Tigerettes will begin postseason play at home on May 5.
