Graham belts game-winning homer
team

The Tigerette softball team took the district championship Wednesday evening in Baxter, squeaking by Livingston Academy in a pitcher’s battle that resulted in a 1-0 win for DeKalb, and saw Kayley Caplinger finish the tourney without allowing a run to be scored against the Tigerettes, striking out 28 opposing batters in the process.

DeKalb scored one run on six hits, and committed no errors. Livingston booked four hits and committed no errors. Caplinger struck out 14 Lady Wildcats in the contest.

Shortstop Tyra Graham made the only significant move against the losing pitcher, Lady Wildcat Sidney Pennycuff, lifting what proved to be the game-winning homerun out of the park in the third inning. While Joni Robinson ripped a long double in the fifth, and Caplinger, Lexi Bates, Katie Hall and Dani Meadows hit a single each in the game, the Tigerettes could not get a rally going.

On their way to the big trophy, DeKalb faced the Upperman Lady Bees on Monday, handing them an 11-0 defeat on their home field.

The Tigerettes scored 11 runs on 11 hits and committed two errors. Caplinger allowed Upperman only one hit in the game, and the Lady Bees committed no errors.

Graham belted out a single, a double and a homerun for DeKalb, while Dani Meadows hit a single and double. Hannah Walker smacked a triple, Kayley Caplinger pounded a double, Lexi Bates hit two singles, and Myranda Bailiff and Joni Robinson added a single each.

The ladies from DeKalb advanced to the championship game after giving Upperman another beating on Tuesday, this time 10-0.

The Tigerette defense held the Lady Bees scoreless on one hit and two errors, with Caplinger striking out eight Upperman batters. DeKalb scored 10 runs on 11 hits and committed no errors.

Tyra Graham hit two doubles for the Tigerettes, while Caplinger and Robinson put in a double each. Bates and Hall hit two singles each, and Joni Robinson, Allison Maynard, and Hannah Walker all added singles.

DeKalb began the tourney with a 13-0 win over York Institute on Saturday.

As a result of the district win, the first round of region play will be held at Danny Bond Field, with the Tigerettes hosting Chattanooga Christian on Monday, May 16 in Smithville.
