Despite the rainy weather last week, the DeKalb County High School Tigerettes softball team managed to get a couple of games in the books, topping Watertown in a rain-shortened game, then coming away with a big win against a team unbeaten in the district.
On Monday, April 11, the Tigerettes were on their home field as they hosted an old rival, Watertown. With dark clouds threatening a downpour, the game went on with the home team coming out on top.
The Purple Lady Tigers wouldn’t do much at the top of the first, but the Tigerettes would get on the board at their first at bat. Jacey Hatfield would start by grounding out to shortstop, then Emma Martin reached on a grounder and an error by short. Ally Griffith was up next and singled on a grounder to second as Martin took second. Morgan Walker would then ground out to second and it looked like DeKalb might have a short inning.
Bryna Pelham stepped up to the plate, and singled on a hard grounder to right as Martin and Griffith touched home. Watertown would get off the field, but the Tigerettes were up, 2-0.
Watertown would get two on base at the top of the second, but again wouldn’t be able to score. DeKalb add one more after Raylie Cowan and Kennedy Polk both walked. After Cowan took third on a wild pitch, Hatfield would step up, grounding into fielder’s choice at second, catching Chloe Lawson, courtesy running for catcher Polk, at second. Cowan was able to score. DeKalb was up 3-0.
It was the same story for the Purple Lady Tigers at the top of the third, getting two runners on but not home, then DeKalb pulled away at the bottom of three.
Griffith singled on a line drive to center, then Walker singled and a grounder to center. Pelham was up again and this time singled on a line drive to center as Griffith came home.
Anniston Farler was up next, and singled on a line drive to left as Walker took third and Pelham second. Bri Murphy would then ground to short, catching Farler at second, but not before Walker touched home. Cowan would then sacrifice on a fly to left field as Pelham scored.
Watertown would get off the field as the rain intensified, with the game called giving DeKalb the 6-0 win. Kora Kilgore took the win from the circle for DeKalb.
A game scheduled against Macon County the following day was called due to weather, but the Tigerettes were back on the field on April 14 as they traveled to White County. The Warriorettes had beat DeKalb 10-0 earlier in the season but the Tigerettes had other plans for the border rival this go round. It would be a pitcher’s game with Kilgore again on the rubber, pitching a shutout against the powerhouse team.
Each team would go three up, three down through the first two innings, then DeKalb would get going in the top of the third. With Madison Martin getting a walk, and both Polk and Hatfield each going down, Emma Martin stepped up and singled on a line drive to right field. Madison Martin, having advanced to third on a passed ball, came home putting the Tigerettes on the board.
The game wouldn’t pick back up until the top of the fourth, when Morgan Walker singled on a grounder to short. As Pelham came to bat, Walker would steal second. Pelham would line out to the pitcher.
Farler was up next, and would hit a double on a line drive to centerfield, sending Walker home. It would turn out as the last point for either team in the game. Going to the bottom of the seventh, the Tigerettes claimed the 2-0 victory.
Kilgore surrendered zero runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out 14.
