The Tigerette softball team took the District 8-AA championship Wednesday night with a 7-0 win over Macon County.
DeKalb scored seven runs on nine hits, with Kayley Caplinger and Joni Robinson slapping a double and a single each. Hanah Panter and Kenzie France hit two singles each, while Megan Walker added a single.
Winning pitcher Kayley Caplinger threw a seven-inning shutout, giving up six hits. The Tigerettes scored two runs in the first, three in the fourth, and added one run in the fifth and sixth.
Both teams committed two errors.
DeKalb reached the championship game by giving Macon a 10-6 beating on Tuesday, putting the team from Lafayette in the loser’s bracket. Macon defeated Upperman to battle their way back to the championship game.
Kayley Caplinger again picked up the win, striking out nine and allowing six runs on seven hits.
DeKalb County scored ten runs on ten hits, and committed three errors. Macon County held a 3-0 lead after the first, and DeKalb didn’t answer until the third, when they broke loose and put three across.
Macon managed another run in the third as well, and still enjoyed a one-point advantage. Both teams scored a run in the fourth, and the Tigerettes finally went ahead 8-6 with three runs in the fifth.
DeKalb put in three more in the sixth, and Macon scored once more in the seventh.
Kayley Caplinger pounded a triple and double for the Tigerettes, and Allison Maynard and Joni Robinson ripped a single and double each. Lexie Bates, Emme Colwell, Myranda Bailiff, and Hanah Panter all placed singles for DeKalb.
An awards ceremony was held after the championship game to honor outstanding players and coaches. Coach Danny Fish, in his first year at the helm, was voted Coach of the Year in District 8-AA.
Tigerette standout Kayley Caplinger took home a sack full of awards after the tourney. She was named District MVP, Pitcher of the Year, and District Tournament MVP for her performance.
Lexie Bates, Myranda Bailiff, Kenzie France, Emme Colwell and Allison Maynard were named to the All-District team, Joni Robinson and Allison Maynard took All District Tournament Awards, and Megan Walker was named to the All-Freshman team for 2017
The Tigerettes will host a sub-state game against Sequatchie County on Monday, May 14 at Danny Bond Field in Smithville.
