The DeKalb County Tigerettes ended their regular season last week, winning two games in a double header, then losing a game the following day. But the team had something to cheer about on Friday after taking a victory in the first round of the district tournament.
On Tuesday, April 30, the Tigerettes hosted Grundy County in a double header that saw the team dominate their opponent. In the first game DeKalb scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back. The team scored three more runs in the third inning, and another three in the fourth. Grundy was only able to put up one run, that coming also in the fourth inning,with DeKalb taking the victory 8-1.
The Tigerettes scored a total of eight runs on 10 hits with zero errors. Grundy County took one run on three hits and no errors.
Tigerettes’ pitcher Lauren Colwell struck out four before Danielle Tyson came in as relief and struck out two. Annieka Norton, Dani Meadows, Abbey Caldwell, and Chelsey Brannon each had one single in the game while Danielle Tyson took three singles and Tyra Graham had two singles and a triple.
In the second game, the Tigerettes continued where they had left off, shutting out Grundy County 9-0. DeKalb scored one run in the first inning and another eight runs in the second. The runs were made on seven hits and zero errors. Grundy County was held to only two hits and no errors.
Tigerettes’ pitcher Shauna Taylor struck out one before Danielle Tyson came in relief for two innings, striking out one.
Danielle Tyson, Annieka Norton, and Dani Meadows each took one single during the game, while Abbey Caldwell and Taylor Monette each had a double. Chelsey Brannon recorded one single and a double.
On Wednesday the Tigerettes wrapped up the regular season as they hosted the Upperman Bees where they played a hard-fought game against the district champions.
DeKalb took the early lead in the game, scoring three runs in the first inning, but it was to be Upperman’s night after they tied things up in the fifth inning and sealed the win with one run in the sixth.
Tigerettes’ pitcher, Tyson, went six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and walking three. Shauna Taylor then came in for one inning and struck out one. Danielle Tyson, Tyra Graham, Dani Meadows, Chelsey Brannon and Loren Cripps each recorded a single in the game. while Annieka Norton took two singles.
The Tigerettes ended the regular season 20-9 overall and 8-4 in the district.
On Friday the Tigerettes not only had to battle York Institute, but also threatening weather as the team won their first game of the District 8AA Softball Tournament in Baxter.
Windy conditions and dark clouds hung over the field as the Tigerettes took the lead with one run in the second inning. The team continued their scoring drive with three more runs in the third inning, another run in the fifth, and four in the sixth. York would only see one run scored, that coming also in the sixth inning.
DeKalb scored a total of nine runs with nine hits and no errors. York Institute scored one run on four hits and madethree errors.
