The DeKalb County High School Tigerettes Softball team came away with two more wins last week, before moving on to participate in the Macon County Tournament at Cane Creek Park in Cookeville. There, the team would get their first loss of the season, but would bounce back to take the championship.
On April 1, the Tigerettes traveled to Smith County to take on the Lady Owls. DeKalb took the early lead in the game and never looked back. The Tigerettes scored one in the first inning, one in the second, three in the third, and eight in the fourth, all while keeping Smith County off of the scoreboard.
The Tigerettes had 13 runs on 13 hits, with zero errors, while Smith County had three hits with zero runs, and two errors. Lauren Colwell was the winnig pitcher with four strikeouts.
Tyra Graham, Danielle Tyson, Dani Meadows, Kayley Caplinger, and Loren Cripps each had one single in the game, while Katie Hall, Chelsey Brannon, and Lauren Colwell each had two. Brannon and Cripps also each had a double during play.
On April 3, the Tigerettes were back in action, this time at home facing a tough team from Upperman. Again, DeKalb would keep their opponent scoreless through the game, taking the win 3-0 through seven innings.
The Tigerettes scored two runs in the second inning, and one in the fifth, getting three runs on seven hits with zero errors. Upperman had two hits, with two errors. Caplinger was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts.
Tyson, Hall, Brannon, Meadows, and Cripps each had a single, while Colwell had two.
On April 5, the Tigerettes traveled to Cane Creek Park in Cookeville to take part in a tournament hosted by Macon County. In their first game, DeKalb would see something they haven’t seen all season, a defeat.
The Tigerettes faced off with Friendship Christian in a tight game that would be decided by one point. DeKalb would take the first lead of the game, scoring four runs in the second inning, but Friendship bounced right back, getting five runs in the third and taking the win.
DeKalb had four runs on four hits, with zero errors, while FC had five runs on six hits, and two errors. Caplinger was the losing pitcher.
Graham, Tyson, Meadows, and Colwell each had a single in the game.
The loss may have been a wakeup call, for in the Tigerettes next games the team would dominate, leading them back to where they started, a championship game with Friendship Christian.
DeKalb’s next game pitted them against White County and the Tigerettes jumped out to a big start. DeKalb scored three in the first inning, one in the second, and topped the score out with seven in the third. They would also keep White County away from home plate, getting the 11-0 victory.
The Tigerettes had 11 runs, on 10 hits, and one error, while White County had one hit and zero errors. Colwell was the winning pitcher.
Tyson, Caplinger, Shauna Taylor, and Meadows each had one single in the game, while Graham had two. Tyson and Caplinger each had a double, while Brannon had two doubles.
The Tigerettes next match was against Gordonsville, and again DCHS rolled out with the early lead. DeKalb scored two in the first inning, and one in the second. Gordonsville got on the board with one run in the third inning, but DeKalb would seal the win, scoring two more in the fourth.
DeKalb’s five runs were scored from nine hits, and zero errors, while Gordonsville had three hits and zero errors. Caplinger was the winning pitcher.
Graham had three singles in the game, while Brannon and Caplinger each had one. Hall had a double, and Tyson and Cripps each had a triple.
DeKalb’s next game had them facing off with Jefferson County. The game would go through six innings, with the Tigerettes again coming away with the win.
The Tigerettes scored a run in the first inning, but wouldn’t touch home again until the fifth with three more. Jefferson would finally get on the board with two runs in the sixth, but it was too little, too late. DCHS took the 4-2 win.
DCHS had 11 hits for four runs, with two errors, while Jefferson had three hits, with two runs, and one error. Colwell was the winning pitcher.
Tyson and Caplinger each had a single in the game, while Graham, Hall, and Colwell each had two. Brannon had a double, while Tyson had an in-the-park home run.
That win set the Tigerettes up for the championship game, which would be a rematch from the game DeKalb had lost earlier in the day. DCHS would go up against Friendship Christian.
Friendship took the lead with two runs in the first inning, but the score would be tied three all at the end of the second. The Tigerettes moved ahead in the third inning, scoring two runs to FC’s one, but Friendship would tie it up in the fourth, 5-5. The fifth inning saw one run each for a 6-6 score, but DeKalb pulled out the win in the sixth with two runs and a 8-6 victory.
The Tigerettes had eight runs with eight hits, and one error, while FC had six runs on eight hits, and one error. Caplinger was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts.
Graham, Tyson, Hall, Brannon, Meadows, and Colwell each had a single in the game, while Colwell had a double. Caplinger had a homerun.
