It was another hard week for the DeKalb County High School Tigers basketball team, after falling in two road games, then suffering another defeat at home last Friday.
On Tuesday, January 30, the Tigers traveled to the far away land of Crossville where they faced off with the Cumberland Jets. The game would remain close through three periods, but the Jets would pull away late.
The Tigers scored seven points in the first period, with a three-pointer by Jon Hendrix, a two-point shot by Alex Antoniak, and a pair of free throws by Seth Fuson. The Jets would take the early lead with 10 points.
DeKalb put 12 points on the board in the second period. Ian Colwell came away with a couple of three-point baskets, while Conner Close got on the board with three two-point shots. The Jets matched the Tigers with 12 points of their own, taking the 22-19 lead at halftime.
Fuson hit a two and three-point shot for the Tigers in the third, while Hendrix added a two-pointer and Dallas Kirby a two-pointer and a free throw. Cumberland was held to nine points, but still claimed a 31-29 lead.
Hendrix and Close would be the only Tigers to score in the fourth, each with a two-point basket. The Jets would end the game with 12, taking the 43-33 win.
The following Thursday, the Tigers were on the road again, this time traveling Livingston where they would take on the Wildcats. It would be another rough night.
Jon Hendrix sank a two-pointer and three three-point baskets for the Tigers in the first period, while Seth Fuson, Ian Colwell, and Alex Antoniak each had a two-pointer. Livingston would jump out big with 26 points.
The Tigers put nine points on the board in the second, with a two and three-pointer by Antoniak and two-pointers by Dallas Kirby and Fuson. The Wildcats would continue on with 12 points and the 38-26 halftime lead.
Kirby made three free throws and a two-point basket for the Tigers in the third, while Fuson and Chase Young each had a two-point shot of their own. Livingston rolled away with 30 points and the 68-35 lead.
DeKalb ended the game with seven more points. Kiece Hannah and Logan Duke each had a two-point shot, while Colwell had a pair of free throws, and Young had one. The Wildcats added 17 to the board, taking the 85-42 win.
Things didn’t get any better for the Tigers on Friday as they hosted the Upperman Bees on their home court.
The Tigers only scored eight points in the first period, with three-point baskets by Jordan Parker and Jon Hendrix, and a two-point shot by Seth Fuson. The Bees opened up with 25 points.
DeKalb scored nine in the second period, with three-point shots by Parker and Conner Close, a two-pointer by Alex Antoniak, and a free throw by Hendrix. Upperman added 16, taking the 41-17 lead at the half.
Ian Colwell scored on a two and three-point shot for the Tigers in the third, while Antoniak added a pair of two-point baskets and a couple of free throws. Owen Snipes got on the board with a two-point shot. The Bees steamrolled the third with 29 points and the 67-30 lead.
The Tigers came away with 11 points in the fourth with a three-point basket and a couple of free throws by Hendrix, a three-point shot by Young, a two-pointer by Duke, and a free throw by Kaleb Spears. The Bees added eight to the board, taking the 75-41 win.
