The DeKalb County Tigers got closer to clawing their way back to .500 as they blew past the Cumberland County Jets this weekend by a count of 8-3.
Logan Cornelius set the tone in the first inning, blasting a two-run homer to give the Tigers an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Jets kept it close with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. It would be the only runs they would score as Logan Cornelius and Daniel Puckett combined to strike out five, surrendering seven hits between them on the mound. Also helping the cause was Grayson Redmon who went two-for-four with the bat and drove in three RBIs. He was joined by Cornelius in having a multi-hit game as he also went two-for-four as the Tigers out hit the Jets 8-7.
The win set the Tigers record at 7-8, the lion’s share of their losses this season coming during their swing through Florida over Spring Break where they were challenged by some the nation’s top ball clubs.
“Our bats are starting to get going,” said Coach Adam Kefauver of their performance since returning home after the Beach Bash. “We are still a little inconsistent but if we get consistent I am confident we will be right there at the top.”
Their win against the Jets came after they dropped a game to Gordonsville, 9-7 last Thursday as four late runs were not enough to overcome a six-run first inning they allowed the host squad.
The Tigers were set to host Livingston Academy Tuesday before traveling to Warren County today. The team goes to Lebanon before returning to play Monterey this Saturday and then matching up against Macon County here this coming Tuesday. They presently hold a 7-8 mark overall and are 3-1 in the district.
