The DCHS Basketball Tigers dropped a 54-53 heartbreaker to Gordonsville last Monday night in Smithville.
The teams ran neck and neck through the first period of the game, and the score was tied 14-14 at the beginning of the second. DeKalb edged out a 28-27 lead by halftime, and stretched it to 44-39 by the end of the third.
A fourth period rally by the Tigers from Smith County brought the game down to the wire, however, when Gordonsville recorded a 15-point fourth quarter and DeKalb only answered with nine. The game went to the buzzer, and Gordonsville pulled out a one-point victory.
Trey Jones topped the Tiger scorecard with 22 points, while Marshal Evins put in 11. Gentry Harpole and Tanner Poss scored eight points each, and Bradley Miller added four for DeKalb.
The Tigers then hosted Central Magnet in their first district game of the season Friday night, falling 44-36 to the team from Murfreesboro in another close contest.
The Tigers fell behind 6-2 in the first period of play, but came back to claim a 15-14 advantage at halftime. DeKalb still led 29-24 at the end of the third, but another late-game burst by CM, the team from Murfreesboro scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to take the lead from DeKalb, who stalled at nine.
Austin Johnson scored nine points in the contest, dropping in three three-point shots. Bradley Miller put seven points in, and Marshal Evins and Tanner Poss had five each. Gentry Harpole and Trey Jones added four points each, and Chandler Vincent scored two points.
The Tigers traveled to Jamestown on Dec. 6 to take on York Institute, and will host Cannon County Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
