The DCHS Tiger baseball team took the Livingston Academy Wildcats down 2-1 in the first round of District 8-AA Baseball Tournament play in Murfreesboro Friday. The Tigers from Central Magnet put DeKalb in the loser’s bracket Saturday, however.

 

Before the tourney began, the Tigers swept Livingston in a doubleheader on May 2 in Smithville. The Wildcats fell 3-0 and 11-2.

 

Tiger pitcher Steven Jennings spent five innings on the mound in the first contest. He pitched a one-hit shutout through 5 innings, striking out eight LA batters.

 

Sam McMillen belted a homerun, and Jacob Self hit a double for DeKalb.

 

McMillen began the second game on the mound for the Tigers, giving up five hits, striking out four Wildcats and walking three in four innings. Christian Pruitt took over for one inning, striking one batter out and walking one.

 

Pruitt and Jacob Self put in a single and a double each, and Steven Jennings hit three singles. McMillen and Colter Norris both hit doubles, and Brady Hughes added a single.

 

The Tigers wrapped up the regular season with a 16-14 record after defeating Watertown 10-8 in a May 4 road game.

John Maynard hammered a single and a double for the DeKalb offensive effort, while Stephen Jennings and Lee Randolph slapped a single each.

 

Meanwhile, Central Magnet shut DeKalb out in a 6-0 game Saturday afternoon, sending the Tigers to face Macon County in the loser’s bracket Monday. While info on the games was not available at press time, a win in the Monday game would have sent DeKalb back to face Central Magnet at 7 p.m.

 

The Tigers defeated Macon County 3- 2, but Central Magnet handed DeKalb a 1-0 loss in the next game, sending the team home for the season.

 

Tiger Pitcher John Maynard gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings against Macon. He struck out seven batters and walked four.

 

John Maynard slapped a single and a double for the Tigers as well, while Steven Jennings hit a single and triple. Seth Whaley put two singles in, and Christian Pruitt and Lee Randolph hit a single each.

 

Sam McMillen gave up 1 run on 2 hits through 7 innings in the game against Central Magnet, striking out seven batters and walking two.

DeKalb ends the season with an 18-16 overall record, and a 9-5 tally in district play.
