The DeKalb County Tiger baseball team’s state championship bid was brought to an end by Christ Academy of Knoxville Wednesday afternoon at the TSSAA Blue Cross Spring Fling State Tournament. The tourney was hosted by Blackman High School in Murfreesboro.After going into the elimination bracket when they dropped a 5-2 game to Lexington earlier in the day, the Tigers were forced into a do-or-die game against Christ Academy, which they lost by a score of 3-1.CAK scored three runs on four hits with no errors.DeKalb scored one run on four hits and made one error.Losing pitcher Destry Wiggins, went seven innings on the mound, and gave up three runs on four hits.He struck out five batters, walked three, and hit one with a pitch.For the Tiger offensive effort, Evan Curtis, Tyler Kent and Andrew Atnip hit a single each, and Hunter Graham smacked a double that resulted in an RBI.In the game against Lexington, the Tigers brought two runs across on seven hits and made two errors.Lexington scored five runs on 10 hits and committed two errors.DeKalb scored one run in the third and one run in the fourth inning in the contest, while Lexington scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one run in the sixth inning.Cody Puckett lost his first game of the season on the mound, throwing for six innings and giving up five runs (two earned) on ten hits.He struck out four batters, walked two, and hit four with the ball.Puckett ended his Sophomore season pitching with a 9-1 overall record.Offensively, Evan Curtis and Tyler Caldwell hit a double each, Shane Salley dropped in two singles with an RBI, and Andrew Atnip put three singles on the book.DeKalb won their opening game of the tournament Tuesday night, beating Polk County 5-3 in Murfreesboro.The Tigers put five runs on the board on five hits, and committed no errors in the opener.Polk County scored three runs on nine hits, with one error.The Tigers put three runners across the plate in the first, and two in the fourth inning.Polk County scored two runs in the first and one in the fifth inning.Winning pitcher Shane Salley went seven innings and gave up three earned runs on nine hits.He struck out two batters and walked four.On offense for Dekalb, Destry Wiggins hammered a triple that resulted in two RBIs, Salley hit two singles and had an RBI, Hunter Graham put a double in, and Matt Giles recorded a single.The Tigers season ends with a regular season district championship, a district and region tournament championship, a sub-state win, and an overall 28-4 record.
