The DeKalb County Tigers Soccer team won the first round of the district tournament last Monday evening as they attempt to win their third consecutive championship. But more significant to the team may be the fact that Monday’s win marks the soccer program’s 100th win for DCHS.
The Tigers hosted Jackson County in the game on what can only be considered a wet, sloppy, and slippery field. The weekend rains had drenched the field, making for some interesting play.
DeKalb played offense for most of the game, keeping the ball for the most part, on their side of the field. The Tigers seemed to be in sync with great passing and ball control, and quickly scored early in the game. From there, the Tigers scored again and never looked back. The team dominated Jackson County with a 7-0 win.
When asked how he felt about the 100th win Coach Kleparek told the Smithville Review, "It’s great, 100 wins in our 11th season. We’re kind of limited to14 to 16 games a season, so it takes a lot to get there, but there’s been a lot of people doing a lot of work and I’ve really enjoyed being here."
Coach K said he’s proud of the team and the program he’s been a part of from the beginning. "I’ve been here for all the wins," he told the Review. "I’ve had 116 players who’ve played for me and I can tell you something about all of them and that really matters to me. I’m thankful for the opportunity, from the school board helping us out, to the superintendent and the principal helping us out. I’m really thankful to be the coach of this team and to be a part of this program. It’s meant a lot for a lot of years, now let’s go out and get a 100 more."
The Tigers ended their regular season of play the previous week, on Thursday, May 2, as the team traveled to AAA opponent Cookeville. Although the Tigers had never beaten Cookeville High School, DeKalb has always fought hard all the way to the end.
The game started with an even possession of the ball among the two teams, but DeKalb was able to get on the board first. As a shot rebounded off the crossbar, Brandon Leiser scored with nine minutes left in the half.
This stunned the Cookeville team, but only five minutes later, Cookeville put one in the back of the net tying the score at 1-1. After halftime, Cookeville came out and put two more scores in the net. The match ended with a loss to the Tigers 3-1.
Even with a loss, the Tigers' heads were high as they knew they played toe-to-toe to a top AAA team.
