With the Thanksgiving holiday last week, the DeKalb County High School Tigers basketball team had a short schedule, taking on the Tigers of Gordonsville for their one and only game. DeKalb looked to run away with the game early on, but Gordonsville had other ideas.
DeKalb jumped out with 20 points in the first period, while holding Gordonsville to 12. Justin Bone was the lead scorer, with four two-point baskets, while Gentry Harpole was also hot, with three of his own. Isaac Beck and John Roller also each had a two-pointer.
The second period was nearly a repeat on the first, with DeKalb putting another 20 points on the board. Harpole continued to find the basket, with five two-point shots, while Aaron Haggard had a pair of three-pointers. Beck and Kevin Aldino each had two-pointers. Gordonsville came away with 14 points, giving DeKalb a 40-26 lead at halftime.
The black and gold Tigers hit the long-range shots in the third period, with Beck getting a pair of three-pointers, while Bone and Haggard each had one. Harpole had a two-point basket. Gordonsville began turning on the heat however, getting 25 points and narrowing DeKalb’s lead, 59-51.
DeKalb opened up with 22 points in the fourth period, including three three-point baskets by Haggard. Bone had a pair of two-pointers, while Harpole had one. Gordonsville would not go away, and DeKalb fans were on the edge of their seat as the visitors chipped away at the lead. Gordonsville would score 28 in the final quarter, coming to within two before the final buzzer sounded. DeKalb took the victory, 81-79.
Bone went seven for eight on free throws, while Beck was three for six. Haggard was two for two, Harpole one for two, and Aldino was one for three.
