The DeKalb County High School Tigers basketball team was in action this week, traveling to Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro to participate in the Adidas Shootout.
On Monday, December 19, the team faced off against Mount Juliet in a game that the Tigers seemed to have control of early on, but let the lead slip away.
The Tigers scored 17 points in the first period, with Elishah Ramos sinking a three-point basket and five free throw points. Conner Close had a pair of two-point shots and a free throw, while Robert Wheeler added a couple of two-pointers of his own. Mount Juliet was held to 12 points.
DeKalb increased their lead in the second period, scoring 20 points. Zack Birmingham got on the board with a couple of two-point hoops and a three-pointer, while Ramos added another two and three-point shot. Close had a three-pointer and a pair of free throw points, while Seth Fuson got on the board with a two-pointer. Mount Juliet was held to 14, giving the Tigers a 36-26 lead at the half.
While the first half belonged to the Tigers, the second half would be for Mount Juliet. DeKalb only scored seven points in the third period, on a couple of two-point shots by Wheeler and a two-pointer and a free throw by Close. Mount Juliet would power through with 19 points, taking the slim 45-43 lead.
It came down to the fourth period, where the Tigers would put 16 points on the board. Wheeler sank three two-point baskets, while Birmingham added a two-pointer and a couple of free throws. Ramos, Close, and Ean Jones was also add two-point shots themselves.
Defensively, Mount Juliet was too much. They would put 18 points on the board and claim the 63-59 comeback win.
Ramos and Close were the top Tigers for points. Each had 15, while Wheeler put 14 points on the board. Birmingham came away with 11 points, while Jones and Fuson each had two.
The following day, the Tigers were back at Riverdale, this time facing off with Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering (Memphis School of Excellence). The Tigers would dominate in this match.
DeKalb would put 26 points on the board in the first period, while holding Memphis to just six. The man on fire was Conner Close with seven two-pointers and a free throw, while Robert Wheeler had a pair of two-point baskets. Zack Birmingham had a two-pointer and a free throw while Elishah Ramos and Alex Antoniak each had a two-pointer of their own.
The Tigers continued on in the second period, scoring 14 more points. Birmingham and Wheeler each sank a pair of two-pointers, while Ramos, Close, and Kaleb Speaks each had one. Memphis was held to five points, giving DeKalb a 40-11 lead at the half.
Ramos came away with a couple of three-pointers in the third period, while Wheeler, Close, and Speaks each had a two-point shot. Memphis was held to three points, giving the Tigers a 52-14 lead.
Seth Fuson put up a couple of two-pointers for the Tigers in the fourth period, while Ian Colwell and Speaks each added a pair of free throw points. Memphis was held to seven, giving DeKalb the 60-21 victory.
Close was the tops in scoring for the Tigers with 19 points, while Ramos and Wheeler each had 10. Birmingham had seven, Speaks six, Fuson four, and Antoniak and Colwell each had two.
