The DeKalb County High School football team made the short trip to Woodbury Friday night to take on the Cannon County Lions in a game that has become known as the Border War.
In what at times resembled a war, the Tigers fought through the heat, questionable call by the officials, and a feisty Lions’ squad to blast any hopes of a Cannon County upset, winning 42-0.
As the first half ended, a Lion and a Tiger player were flagged for fighting. The Lion’s player took his helmet off and threw it onto the field, causing the player to be ejected from the game.
DeKalb did not finish the battle unscathed, as there were several players injured in the contest.
At the 2:27 mark in the fourth quarter, Tigers’ running back Divonta Milan was tackled by a host of Lions, then a few minutes later, was carted off the football field and taken to the hospital. Milan, who will be back on the sideline Friday night, was treated at the hospital for concussion-like symptoms, then released a short time later.
All of DeKalb’s points came in the first half, allowing Tiger Head Coach Steve Trapp the luxury of playing some younger players the entire second half of the game.
Tiger quarterback Lucas Phillips went 7 of 13 for 150 yards with four touchdowns. Jacob Parsley led all Tiger receivers with two receptions for 70 yards with one touchdown. Sonni Fullilove had one catch for 27 yards with one score. Will Molander also had one catch for 13 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore tight end Lance ball had one reception for 2 yards with one touchdown. Chris Chapman had one catch for 21 yards, and Jason Judkins had one reception for 17 yards.
On the ground, the Tigers were led by Divonta Milan’s 115 yard on just 10 carries. Senior tailback Chris Chapman also had a good night carrying the ball six times for 71 yards with one touchdown. A.J. Mooneyham had four carries for 38 yards, while Will Molander carried the ball twice for 10 yards. Fullback Sam Giles had one carry for 9 yards.
The Tigers’ offense racked up a total of 570 yards on the night with just 41 offensive plays.
DeKalb’s defense shut out their opponent for the third consecutive week. Junior Eli Gill led the defense with five stops for the Tigers.
