The DeKalb County High School baseball team celebrated senior night Monday while hosting the Cannon County Lions in the two team’s last scheduled contest.
Aided by underclassmen Sam McMillen’s and John Maynard’s pitching performance, the senior Tigers walked off their home-field victorious with an 8-1 win over the Lions.
Junior Sam McMillen started on the mound for the Tigers lasting four innings while allowing no runs on just two hits and striking out three. Freshman John Maynard pitched three hitless innings giving up one run with three strike-outs but did allow five walks. Leading the way at the plate for the Tigers McMillen had two of DeKalb’s five hits with a walk and one RBI. Although DeKalb struggled to hit at times, each Tiger starter managed to reach base during the game.
Cannon County’s pitching allowed a combined five hits with six walks but only one earned run.
After Cannon closed the gap to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning defense was a factor in outcome of the game as the Lions allowed five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Tigers the 8-1 lead.
DeKalb’s Aaron Patterson had one double, Christian Pruitt and Cason Oakley each had one single, while Sam McMillen posted two singles for the Tigers.
Cannon’s Nick Vassar suffered the loss while DeKalb’s Sam McMillen got the win.
The Tiger’s next game will be Friday as the District Tournament is scheduled to begin with their opponent yet to be determined. Tiger pride!
