The DeKalb County Tigers started the season strong with an opening day win over Sequatchie and followed up by a 17-0 no hitter against Red Boiling Springs.

Pitchers and Logan Cornelius and Daniel Puckett combined for the no-hitter over Red Boiling Springs with Cornelius toeing the rubber for the first three perfect innings, permitting no hits or walks as he fanned four batters. Puckett came in and pitched two innings in relief, permitting only one walk while striking out two.

The no-hitter came on the same day that the Tigers exploded at the plate, going up 7-0 after two thanks to a six-run second inning. Grayson Redmon led the way, generating three RBIs on the day as he went one-for-three with the stick. Patrick Cantrell contributed two RBIs when he swatted a two bagger. The Tigers put up the lopsided score thanks to 10 total hits and nine free passes awarded by a trio of Red Boiling Springs pitchers who walked nine DeKalb batters. Norris and Derek Young led the hit parade for the Tigers with two swats apiece.

On the base paths, DeKalb improved their position with Norris and Redmon both swiping two bases apiece as the Tigers stole seven total bases during the rout. The only statistical category the visitors led in were errors, as they made just one miscue in the field while DeKalb was tagged with two errors.

It wasn’t so lopsided for the Tigers in their home opener Tuesday as Sequatchie County proved to be a game opponent, staying around until the end as DeKalb claimed the 11-9 shootout.

However, DeKalb took initiative, scoring three runs for what would be the winning margin.
