



The DeKalb County Tigers basketball team didn’t travel too far during their holiday tournament schedule, traveling to Rutherford County last week to participate in the Adidas Classic at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, TN. The boys would face tough competition in their first game, but would come out on top in their second.
On Monday, December 20, the Tigers faced the Smyrna Bulldogs in their opening game of the tourney. DeKalb would jump out big early in the game, but Smyrna would inch their way back to keep things close.
The Tigers scored 18 points in the first period, with Isaac Knowles coming out strong. Knowles had three two-pointers and a pair of free throws, while Stetson Agee and Zack Birmingham each had a three-point shot. Jordan Young hit a two-pointer, while Nathaniel Crook had a pair of free throws. Smyrna was held to just nine points.
Young hit a three-pointer and a free throw for the Tigers in the second period, while Robert Wheeler, Knowles, and Zack Birmingham each had a two-point basket. The Bulldogs came roaring back, scoring 19 and tying the score at 28 at the half.
Agee came away with seven points in the third period, with a three-point basket, a two-pointer, and a pair of free throws. Elishah Ramos had a three-pointer and a free throw, while Knowles added a two-point shot. Smyrna also scored 13, keeping the game tied at 41.
It all came down to the fourth period. The Tigers would score 14 with a couple of two-pointers and a free throw by Knowles, and a two-pointer and a pair of free throws by Ramos. Birmingham and Agee each had a couple of free throw points, while Young added one. The Bulldogs ended the game with 19, taking the 60-55 win.
Knowles scored 17 points for the Tigers in the game, while Agee had 12. Ramos had eight points, Young and Birmingham each had seven, while Wheeler and Crook each had two.
The following day, the Tigers were again facing the Bulldogs, but this time the Cornersville Bulldogs. It would be a much better game for DeKalb.
DeKalb jumped out early, scoring 17 points in the first period. Birmingham came away with a pair of three-point baskets, while Ramos added a two and three-point shot. Agee had a couple of two-pointers, while Knowles had one. Cornersville was held to 11 points.
The Tigers added to their lead in the second period, scoring 10 points. Wheeler hit a pair of two-pointers, while Young added a two-point shot and a free throw. Agee also had a two-point basket. The Bulldogs were held to just six, giving the Tigers a 27-17 halftime lead.
Wheeler came out big for the Tigers, in the third period, scoring eight points. He had three two-point shots, and a couple of free throws, while Knowles added a couple of two-point baskets. Cornersville was held to just four points. DeKalb was up, 39-21.
DeKalb piled it on in the fourth period, scoring 14 more points. Agee sank a two-point and a three-point shot, while Ian Colwell had a three-pointer of his own. Wheeler, Knowles, and Alex Antoniak each had a two-pointer. Cornersville was held to just six, giving the Tigers the 53-27 victory.
Wheeler had 14 points in the game, while Agee had 12. Knowles had eight, Birmingham six, Ramos five, Young and Colwell each had three, and Antoniak two.
