The DeKalb County High School Tigers football team participated in the Smith County Football Jamboree last Saturday evening, taking on the Clay County Bulldogs in two quarters of play. The first quarter saw the varsity team out in full force, followed by a quarter featuring the JV squad. In both quarters the Tigers looked dominate, with a combined score of 20-6.
This was the last scrimmage before the Tigers begin their regular season next Friday night, and Head Coach Steve Trapp said he likes what he sees. “I think we did a lot of good things, but I think we need to move a little bit faster and have more of a sense of urgency.”
“The first quarter was our varsity,” Trapp continued. “I thought we played pretty clean. I don’t think we had any penalties or anything like that. I thought our quarterback made some good plays outside of the pocket, keeping his eyes downfield. Our receivers made some good plays. Our running back, out of the backfield, also made a big play.”
When asked about the JV team, Coach Trapp said the young team looks strong. The JV team gave up a running touchdown as they took the field, but then dominated the clock and the field as they systematically moved the ball down the field. “I really like what I see, and I’m really excited for those young guys in that second quarter, to control basically the whole quarter and move the ball right down the field. That was good to see.”
Coach Trapp also had high praise for his JV quarterback, Jordan Parker. “Parker is a competitor,” Trapp said. “He’s a small fry, but he’s a competitor and I really like how he’s working and controlling what he can’t control. He gets out there and works really hard. It’s fun to watch him play.”
As for the varsity team, Trapp said his team looks well rounded. “We mixed up our plays really good. We stayed vanilla tonight, not calling a whole lot of different things. I think we’ve got the ability to do what we’ve got to do to be successful. If we need to throw the ball, I feel like we can do it. If we have the opportunity to run the ball, I feel like we can do that too.”
The Tigers now go to prepare for their first regular season game. The first game is next Friday night, at Warren County at 7:00 p.m.
