It was the Tigers versus the Tigers last week as DeKalb County High School faced off with Macon County on the road and at home. It would be a low scoring battle in the first game, then the home team would get a big win on their own field.
On Monday, March 28, the Tigers traveled to the far away land of Macon County where they would play their Tiger counterparts. It would be a pitcher’s game on both sides.
It would be slow from the plate for DeKalb with Isaac Knowles getting a double in the first inning, and Dexton Emberton getting on after a HBP in the second.
Macon would get on the board first at the bottom of the third, after an error by pitcher Patrick Cantrell, then another runner scored on an error by catcher Ty Webb. Macon was up 2-0.
DeKalb would get moving at their next at bat. After Avery South goes down swinging, Konner Young gets an easy trip to first with a walk. Cantrell would sacrifice to the pitcher as Young took second. Emberton would be up next and would get DeKalb on the board after a single on a line drive to left field. Young would touch home plate.
Unfortunately, that would be where the score would stay. Cantrell took the loss, allowing one hit and two runs, over six innings, striking out 15.
The following day, the Tigers were back at home, this time hosting Macon County. It would be a much different game.
At first things looked ominous for DeKalb. At the top of the first, after the top of the lineup went down swinging, a single had a runner on first, then a ground ball to second resulted in the second out at second base. With one runner on, a home run over centerfield put the Macon Tigers up 2-0.
As DeKalb came to bat it was obvious they had come to play. Kolter Kilgore would get a single on a ground ball to right, then steal second, followed by Isaac Knowles singling the same way as Kilgore too third. After Konner Young lined out to center, and Avery South strikes out swinging, Patrick Cantrell came to the plate and reached on a grounder and an error by centerfield. Cantrell would take second and third on the error as Knowles and Kilgore scored.
Next, Dexton Emberton was up and doubled on a line drive to center, as Cantrell came home. DeKalb was up, 3-2.
Macon would add two more to their tally at the top of the second. With two on base, a triple line drive to center Knowles resulted in two runners touching home plate.
DeKalb would continue to pull away at the bottom of the second, with one Tiger batter coming away with a grand slam. After Grayson Hendrix lined out to second, Westin Wright took a base with a HBP. Kilgore would go down swinging, and with two outs on the board, Knowles would get a walk. Young was up next and would also get an easy trip to first base.
With bases loaded, Avery South stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch he knocked the ball over the left field fence. DeKalb was back on top, 7-4.
The home team would add another run at the bottom of the third, after Ty Webb doubled on a pop fly to left. Carson Donnell would courtesy run for Webb, and would advance to third after a single on a grounder to right by Grayson Hendrix. Later, Knowles was back at the plate and hit a double on a grounder to left, sending Donnell home. DeKalb was up, 8-4.
Macon would pull to within one at the top of the fifth, after a runner scored on a passed ball, then a triple to right field Hendrix resulted in another run. An error by second base Kilgore would add one more run before DeKalb could get off the field.
DeKalb would get back to scoring as they came to bat. Kilgore doubled on a fly to center, then Knowles reached on an error by third. Young would then single on a line drive to left, loading the bases. South was up again, and this time he doubled on a line drive to left, as Kilgore and Knowles touched home plate.
Cantrell would then step up and hit a triple line drive to right, as Young and Dallas Kirby, running for South, scored. Next it was Emberton, who would come away with a single line drive to center, sending Cantrell home. DeKalb had upped their lead, 13-7.
The game would go to the top of the seventh, Macon would manage two more runs. DeKalb would hold off the Tigers to take the 13-9 victory.
Emberton took the win from the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits over four and a third innings. He struck out three. South and Knowles came in later to close out the game.
