Tough Games for DMS Basketball

The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were back in action last week, playing three nights of games including a makeup night on Friday for Eighth Grade Night.

 

On Monday, January 10, the teams were on the road, facing Prescott Middle. In the girls' game, the Lady Saints would fall behind early and would not be able to recover.

 

The Lady Saints scored 14 points in the first period, with Chloe Van Vranken scoring a couple of two-pointers and a pair of free throws, while Bella Rackley hit a three-pointer and a free throw. Larissa Mooneyham and Lillie Young each had a two-point basket. Prescott came away with 30 points.

 

Addison Murphy scored the only points for the Lady Saints in the second, with a two-point shot. Prescott padded their lead with nine points and a 39-16 halftime lead.

 

The Lady Saints only scored two more points in the third period, with free throws by Mooneyham and Van Vranken. Prescott added nine more points, increasing their lead 48-18.

 

DMS managed six points in the fourth period, with a three-pointer by Rackley, a two-pointer by Van Vranken, and a free throw by Mooneyham. Prescott only scored four but claimed the 52-24 victory.

 

The Saints wouldn't do much better in their game. DMS scored five points in the first period, with a three-pointer by Jon Hendrix and a two-point shot by Wyatt Carter. Prescott jumped out big with 11 points.

 

Devin Fish scored on a three-point basket and pair of free throws for the Saints in the second period, while Hendrix and Jamison Troncoso each had a two-pointer. Prescott was held to just two points, giving the Saints the 14-13 halftime lead.

 

Hendrix came away with a three-point basket for the Saints in the third period, while Fish had a two-pointer and a free throw. Prescott came back strong, scoring 13 points and retaking the 26-20 lead.

 

The Saints scored seven points in the fourth, with Hendrix hitting a three-pointer, while Kiece Hannah had a two-point basket. Troncoso added a pair of free throw points. Prescott ended the game with 18 points and the 44-27 victory.

 

On Thursday, January 13, the teams were again on the road, this time traveling to Avery Trace.

 

In the Lady Saints' game, both teams would start out slow, but DeKalb would gradually pull away. DMS scored three points in the first period, with Lillie Young hitting a two-pointer, while Larissa Mooneyham had a free throw. Avery Trace was held to just two points.

 

Chloe Van Vranken got going in the second period, scoring a two and three-point basket, while Brooklyn Fuson had a three-pointer of her own. Young also had another two-point shot. Avery Trace was held to six points, giving the Lady Saints a 13-8 lead at the half.

 

Fuson added a pair of three-pointers for the Lady Saints in the third, while Van Vranken had a two-point shot. Avery Trace also score eight, with DMS keeping a 21-16 lead.

 

Van Vranken sank four free throws in the fourth period, while Mooneyham had a two-pointer and a free throw. Young added another two-pointer. Avery Trace was held to four points, giving the Lady Saints the 30-20 victory.

 

In the Saints' game, DMS would start slow, but would make it a game in the second half. DeKalb scored only two points in the first period, with a two-pointer by Kiece Hannah. Avery Trace opened up with 15 points.

 

Devin Fish got into the game for the Saints in the second period, with a three-pointer, a two-pointer, and a free throw. Hannah added another two-point shot. Avery Trace was held to four points, but claimed a 19-10 lead at the half.

 

The Saints scored another eight points in the third period, with a two-pointer and three free throw points by Fish, while Jon Hendrix sank a three-point shot. Avery Trace jumped back out with 11 points, padding their lead, 30-18.

 

Fish scored 10 points for the Saints in the fourth with three two-point shots and four free throws, while Hannah had a two-pointer, and Hendrix a free throw. Avery Trace was held to seven points, but it was enough for the 37-31 win.

 

On Friday, January 14, the teams were back on their home court, this time taking on White County while honoring DMS basketball eighth graders.

 

During the Lady Saints game, DMS battled a very good squad from White County. DeKalb was held to only two points in the first with a two-point basket by Brookyn Fuson. White County rolled out with 14 points.

 

The Lady Saints put 12 points on the board in the second, with Chloe Van Vranken hitting a pair of three-point shots and a couple of free throws. Bella Rackley had a three-point shot, while Lillie Young added a free throw. White County added another 15 to the board, taking a 29-14 halftime lead.

 

DMS was held to just four points in the third, with a three-pointer by Van Vranken and a free throw by Olivia Derrick. White County piled on the points with 24, and a 53-18 lead.

 

It would be all White County in the fourth. They would add nine points, taking the 62-18 win.

 

Between the games, DMS held its Eighth Grade Night, honoring basketball eighth graders for their accomplishments. Students were escorted by their parents as they were recognized. Those honored were Averie McMinn, Carleigh Beckham, Larissa Mooneyham, Rowan Miller, Bella Rackley, Chloe VanVranken, Addison Murphy, Callie Hall, Addyson Swisher, Logan Duke, Devin Fish, Aidan Turner, Turner Bryant, Nicolas Daw, Jon Hendrix, Bradley Hale, Wyatt Carter, and Jamison Troncoso.

 

In the Saints' game, the boys would keep the score much closer, taking things to the fourth period.

 

The Saints would score seven points in the first period, with Wyatt Carter coming away with a pair of two-point shots, while Kiece Hannah had one, and Devin Fish had a free throw. White County opened with 13 points.

 

Fish sank a couple of three-point baskets in the second, while Jon Hendrix had a three-pointer and four free throw points. Logan Duke also added a three-point shot. White County was held to 10 points, tying the game at 23 at halftime.

 

Duke hit a two and three-point shot for the Saints in the third period, while Fish had a two-pointer. White County caught fire with 16 points, retaking the 39-30 lead.

 

Fish had seven free throw points for the Saints in the fourth, while Hendrix added a three-pointer and a free throw. White County sealed up the game with 13 points, and the 52-41 win.
