



The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams returned to play with three scheduled game dates last week, two away and one at home. It would be a rough week for both teams.
On Monday, November 29, DMS traveled to Baxter to face some tough Upperman teams.
In the Lady Saints’ game, Larissa Mooneyham scored the only points for DMS in the first period, with a two-point basket. Upperman scored 23 points, jumping out to a huge lead.
The Lady Saints scored six points in the second period, off of a pair of three-point shots by Addison Murphy. The Lady Bees kept on piling on the points, scoring 14 and taking a 37-8 lead at the half.
It was all Mooneyham for the Lady Saints in the third period, getting a two-pointer and sinking four free throws. Upperman padded their lead with 19 points, and a 56-14 lead.
Chloe Van Vranken had a three-point basket, a two-pointer, and a free throw point for the Lady Saints in the fourth, while Lillie Young added a free throw. Upperman was held scoreless, but claimed the 56-21 win.
The Saints would have an even worse night. DMS scored nine points in the first period, with Devin Fish coming away with a three and two-point shot. Jon Hendrix also had a three-pointer, while Wyatt Carter added a free throw. The Bees opened up with 17 points.
Logan Duke and Jamison Troncoso each had a two-point basket for DMS in the second period, but Upperman piled on 22 points, taking a 39-13 halftime lead.
Fish came away with a two-pointer in the third, while Duke and Troncoso each had a free throw point for the Saints. The Bees couldn’t be stopped as they added 24 more points and commanded a 63-17 lead.
The Saints would put up eight points in the fourth. Fish and Turner Bryant each had a three-point shot, while Hendrix added a two-pointer. The Bees would seal up the win with six more points, ending the game at 69-25.
The following night, the teams were back on their home court, this time taking on strong teams from Warren County.
In the Lady Saints game, DMS would score just one point in the first period from a free throw by Van Vranken. Warren would come out with 17 points on the board.
The Lady Saints finally got into the game in the second period, scoring 11 points. Lillie Young had a two and three-pointer, while Mooneyham had a two-point shot and a pair of free throws. Van Vranken added a pair of free throw points. Warren was held to just two, but they held a 19-12 lead at the half.
Brooklyn Fuson and Young each had a two-pointer for DMS in the third, while Van Vranken added two more free throw points. Warren came away with 13 points, increasing their lead, 32-18.
The Lady Saints scored six in the fourth, with Mooneyham getting a pair of two-point baskets and a free throw, while Van Vranken added a free throw of her own. Warren was held to seven, more than enough for the 39-24 victory.
The Saints would also have a tough game. Fish had a three-point shot in the first period, while Troncoso added a two-pointer. Warren County jumped out with 12 points on the scoreboard.
Carter had a two-point shot for the Saints in the second, while Fish and Hendrix each added a free throw point. Warren added nine to the board, taking a 21-9 halftime lead.
The Saints came out better in the third period, scoring 10 points. Kiece Hannah had a pair of two-pointers and a free throw, while Hendrix had a three-point basket. Fish had a two-pointer. Warren added to their lead with 13 points. They were up, 34-19.
Fish scored a pair of three-point shots for DMS in the fourth, while Hendrix had a three-pointer of his own. Duke and Troncoso each had a two-point shot. Warren matched the Saints point for point, taking the 47-32 win.
On Thursday, December 2, the teams traveled to White County, where the games got even harder.
In the Lady Saints’ game, Van Vranken scored the only two points DMS would see in the first period, both off of free throws. Meanwhile, White County put 22 on the scoreboard.
It wouldn’t be any better in the second, as once again Van Vranken would get two free throw points. White added 13 and took a 35-4 halftime lead.
Van Vranken sank a two-pointer in the third, but again it would be the only points the Lady Saints would see. White County added nine.
The Lady Saints would be scoreless in the fourth, while White sealed their win with six. They took the 50-6 win.
The Saints were in the same boat. Fish scored a three and two-point basket in the first period, while Hannah added a free throw. White County put 15 on the board.
Carter would be the only Saint to score in the second period, sinking a two-point basket. White County came away with 17 points, and a 32-8 lead at the half.
Troncoso was the only scorer for the Saints in the third, getting a two-point shot and a free throw. White Continued to pull away with 14, and a 46-11 lead.
It would be all White County in the fourth. They scored five, while keeping the Saints off the board. White County took the 51-11 victory.
