The DeKalb County High School Tigerettes softball team had a rough week last week. First, their head coach, Danny Fish, was noticeably absent from all games, and when asked as to the reason for the absence, Principal Randy Jennings and Director of Schools Patrick Cripps had no comment.
Whether any drama off the field effected the team's performance in any way is up for debate, but the team would fall in all three of its games, albeit with two narrow losses.
On Monday, April 19, the Tigerettes were at home, taking on a tough Cookeville team.
The Tigerettes struck first with four runs at the bottom of the first. With bases loaded, Aniston Farler doubled on a line drive to right field, sending Morgan Walker and Jacey Hatfield home. Then, Madison Martin singled on a fly to left field as Aly Griffith crossed home plate. After that, Bri Murphy singled on a line drive to center field, allowing Farler to come home. DeKalb was up, 4-0.
Cookeville got things going in the second, scoring three runs of their own, then tying the game in the third with one run.
The Tigerettes pulled ahead again in the fourth inning. After Hatfield singled on a line drive to center field, Morgan Walker scored on the throw. Afterward, Griffith singled on a line drive to center, as Emma Johnson scored. DeKalb was up 6-4.
Cookeville came right back at their next turn at bat, scoring one run and cutting the lead to one.
It came down to the seventh inning, when Cookeville, with two on base, hit a double and scored two runs, taking the 7-6 lead.
DeKalb had one more chance at bat, and Hatfield would single on a line drive to center, but would later get caught stealing second. Griffith would also get on base off of a line drive, but that would be as far as they would get. Cookeville took the win.
Murphy took the loss on the mound, surrendering seven runs on eight hits over seven innings, striking out two and walking one. The Tigerettes had 15 hits in the game, with Hatfield and Martin each getting three.
The following day, the Tigerettes were on the road, in another late-game nail-biter, this time against Macon County.
The Tigerettes fell behind early, with Macon getting one run in the first inning, then another six in the second.
DeKalb didn't get on the board until the bottom of the third inning, when Morgan Walker singled on a grounder to right field, as Ellie Cripps touched home plate.
The Tigerettes were in the game, but Macon countered with another run in the fourth, taking an 8-1 lead. DeKalb put another run in the books at their next at bat, when Martin grounded into fielder's choice and Hatfield came home.
DeKalb struck again in the bottom of the fifth. Johnson doubled on a line drive to right field, sending Morgan Walker home. The Tigerettes had cut into the lead, 8-3.
Macon added one more run in the sixth, and it didn't look good for the Tigerettes until the bottom of the seventh inning. Johnson singled on a ground ball to center, allowing Walker to score. Hatfield later singled on a ground ball to the pitcher, as Johnson scored. Next, Madison Martin doubled on a line drive to right field, allowing Griffith to come home, then Murphy was out on a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Hatfield to touch the plate. Next, Cripps singled on a grounder to shortstop, as Martin scored.
The Tigerettes had cut the lead to only one, but they would get no further. Macon would hold on to get the narrow 9-8 win.
Murphy led the Tigerettes on the mound, allowing 12 hits and nine runs over seven innings, walking zero. DeKalb had 12 hits in the game, with Walker going 3-5 to lead at the bats, as well as two stolen bases.
On Friday, the Tigerettes had trouble keeping up with Warren County.
DeKalb would jump out to an early lead at the bottom of the first inning, when Hatfield singled on a line drive to center, driving Morgan Walker home.
Warren came roaring back in the third, as the Lady Pioneers put five runs on the board, aided by a homer with two on base.
Johnson got a homer of her own as the Tigerettes came to bat, but as it would end up, it would be the last point of the game for DeKalb.
The Lady Pioneers added two runs in the fourth, and another in the fifth to cap off the game, taking the 8-2 win.
Cripps took the loss, allowing seven hits and seven runs over four innings, striking out two and walking zero. Hatfield, Johnson, and Walker each had one hit for the Tigerettes in the game.
