Two former DeKalb County pitchers are up for a spot in the MLB draft, which began Monday.

Cody Puckett, a 2013 graduate of DCHS and current hurler at MTSU, reportedly traveled to Cincinnati last week to show off his skills for the Reds, and has been scouted by the Oakland A’s.

Puckett pitched three winning games for the Blue Raiders this year, finishing with the second lowest ERA on the squad, 4.76. He led the team in strikeouts, sending 71 batters back to the dugout in 58.23 innings on the mound. Dreaftsite.com projects Puckett to be drafted in the 15th Round, a 451st overall pick, by the Houston Astros.

Puckett was the District 8-AA Pitcher of the Year as a junior at DeKalb County, where he led the Tigers to two Class AA state tournament appearances.

He played two seasons for Columbia State Community College before going to MTSU. He posted a 9-4 record and registered more than 125 strikeouts in two seasons at Columbia State. Puckett was a member of the weekend rotation during both of his seasons at Columbia State, and helped lead the team to the JUCO World Series in 2014, when he posted a 5-0 record.

Meanwhile, 2017 DCHS graduate Steven Jennings has been listed in the top 50 MLB draft picks, according to MLB.com.

While Jennings has already signed to play college baseball at Ole Miss, major league scouts with radar guns stalked him all season. He is ranked number 47 in the MLB’s top 100 draft prospects.

He tore his ACL playing football this year, ending his career as Tiger quarterback early in the season, but has recovered fully, and is apparently impressing pro ball scouts. With a fastball that reaches 95 MPH, Jennings is predicted to go as high as the first round of the draft.

Jennings pitched 51.2 innings in 11 games before the regular season ended for the Tigers, allowing only 15 hits and 11 runs all year. He struck out 99 batters this season, with an ERA of .542.
