DeKalb County soccer players Evan Morse and Cameron Miller celebrated their team’s state championship win for the second year in a row on November 10, 2019. Their travel soccer team, the Murfreesboro Soccer Club 2004 Strikers, remained undefeated throughout the Tennessee State Soccer Association (TSSA) season, and they won the State Cup tournament without conceding a goal. They will travel to Dallas, Texas in June 2020 to represent Tennessee in the US Youth Soccer Southern President’s Cup.
Although Cameron was unable to play this season due to his battle with leukemia, he was always in the hearts and minds of his teammates. The team prayed for Cameron before every game and wore warm up jerseys with "Fight 4 Camo" emblazoned on the back. Cameron was able to attend the Championship game, and the team awarded the trophy cup to him. Both boys have represented DeKalb well, with Cameron winning the prestigious "Coach's Choice" award in 2019 and Evan winning the award in 2018.
After four seasons of travel soccer together, their team has competed in the State championship game all four seasons, and they have won the championship three of those four seasons. In addition, the Strikers have won seven tournament championships in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida. Their coach Enrique Saurez was recognized for his excellence and hard work with the TSSA 2018-2019 Competitive Boys’ Coach of the Year award. Morse and Miller look forward to a successful spring soccer season playing for DeKalb County High School before reuniting with their Strikers team to compete in Texas next summer.
