The DeKalb County Tigerettes traveled to Upperman on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Livingston Academy Wildcats in the second round of the district tournament. The Tigerettes walked away with an impressive 6-1 win to advance to the next round.
Danielle Tyson was the winning pitcher in the match-up as she pitched seven innings, allowed three hits, had two strike-outs and walked one.
The first inning was quick for both teams as neither team would score and only Loren Cripps found a base hit in the inning.
The Lady Wildcats found a way to score in the top of the second, giving them the 1-0 lead. DeKalb would match that as Lauren Colwell would single to left field and bring in Abbey Caldwell to tie the game at one each.
DeKalb would later explode in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs scored with Cripps knocking down an RBI single to shallow centerfield. Another run came in compliments of Livingston Academy’s pitcher as she walked a batter with the bases loaded, and a third run came in off Brooke Hutchings when there was an error in the outfield that allowed the runner to score, giving DeKalb their first lead at 4-1.
DeKalb’s defense was a well-oiled machine as Tyson did not allow a hit from the top of the fourth. In the top of the sixth, the Tigerettes would score two more runs. One came on a wild pitch and another runner was brought in by Hendrixson with a single down the third base line.
The Tigerettes would end the game in the top of the seventh as Tyson allowed just one hit and forced the next three batters to either fly out or ground out.
The Tigerettes’ hitters were Alex Meadows with two singles; Danielle Tyson a single; Loren Cripps had two singles and a double; Tifffini Hendrixson had two singles; Abbey Caldwell had a triple; Lauren Colwell a single; Taylor Monette had two singles; and Annieka Norton with a single.
The DeKalb County Tigerette softball team took first runner-up in the district Thursday night, losing out to undefeated district champions, the Upperman Bees 3-0.
DeKalb battled hard against the number-one team throughout the game making only a few mistakes. Those few mistakes proved costly as the Bees would capitalize on the Tigerette mistakes
DeKalb played solid through the beginning of the game until, in the third inning with the bases loaded, there was an errant throw from the catcher to third base which allowed a run to score. DeKalb would regain their composure and continue to battle Upperman.
In the fifth inning, DeKalb would again be bitten by small mistakes that would pay off big for the Bees. A wild pitch with runners on second and third allowed a runner to score and another to advance in scoring position. Upperman would also drive in a run with a deep shot to centerfield, giving them a 3-0 lead.
The dominant pitching and the disciplined defense of the Bees was too much for DeKalb. Throughout the entire game the Bees only gave up three hits, ending any title hope that DeKalb would have.
Lauren Colwell was the losing pitcher for the game as she gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits, struck out one through six innings. Hits from DeKalb came from Alex Meadows with a single, Loren Cripps a single and Abbey Caldwell with a triple.
