DeKalb County native Isaac Walker is making his presence known in the golf circles after being voted a Third Team NAIA All-American. Walker was selected by the NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Association All-America Committee, with total of 45 student-athletes honored, and 15 individuals named to each of three teams.
Walker, who grew up in Smithville, was a star player during his high school career at DCHS, being ranked 8th in the State by his senior year, and going to the state championship as an individual, three of his four years. He also competed in the Sneds Tour for five years and, in his senior year, among over a thousand golfers, Walker finished .001 of a point out of first place.
According to his father, Scott Walker, after high school Isaac wanted to stay close to home. “Cumberland offered him a four-year scholarship, based on his ACT score and his golfing accolades,” Walker said.
While Walker is technically a sophomore, he competed this season as a freshman, due to the COVID pandemic cancelling last year’s season. With the cancellation, players around the country earned an extra year of eligibility in their sports.
During his time with Cumberland, Walker has been the leading scorer for the team, and earned All-Mid-South Conference First Team and Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year this season as well. He finished the season with a team-leading 74.4 strokes per round, while posting five Top-10 finishes this season, helping Cumberland to their best finish at the NAIA National Championship. He finished the tournament in 28th place individually.
Walker won the Riley Moore Invitational last fall with a one-under score, and finished fifth in the Mid-South Conference Fall Preview at Bowling Green Country Club. He also posted a 10th place finish at the Skyhawk Invitational in the spring with a three-round score of 220, and took second place at the Wolf Pack Spring Invitational. At the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational, Walker took third place after a two-over in Crossville, TN.
Walker becomes only the third All-American in Cumberland men's golf program history, and the fourth player to be named Conference Freshman Player of the Year from the school.
